Loose Women’s Jane McDonald bursts into tears as she opens up about the death of her fiancé Eddie Rothe

LOOSE Women's Jane McDonald burst into tears as she opened up about the death of her fiancé Eddie Rothe for the first time.

The 58-year-old sadly lost her long-term partner Ed aged 67, to lung cancer in March this year.

Jane – who co-presented the Loose Women from 2004 to 2014 – returned to theITV show to talk about her loss for the first time with Kaye Adams,Nadia Sawalha and Carol McGiffin.

Emotions ran high in the studio just seconds into the segment after her former co-stars welcomed her back into the studio.

Kaye said: "People might be thinking 'Why is poor Jane sitting here?'"

As Jane wiped the tears from her eyes, she said: "I don't want to feel sad for the rest of my life. That wasn't Ed, Ed was golden. He was smiley. He was beautiful.

"I've got to do the first interview and I couldn't be with better people here. It's been tough. But there's so many of us out there that who have been through this.

"My heart goes out to you all because it's been a tough 18 months for so many of us."

The pair had a romance in their late teens, lived together then drifted apart after Ed went off pursue his music career with Liquid Gold.

Then in 2008, 27 years after they split, they bumped into each other by chance after he appeared on This Morning as Jane was in the same ITV studios filming Loose Women.

The same year they got engaged.

Jane described their relationship as "13 years of absolute bliss" and told the Loose Women how she's been coping with things over the past few months.

She said: "I'm not good at being sad, I'm not good at this, I'm not good at crying.

"So everyday I wake up and I get that thud like someone has hit me, i think 'Are you going to go down the dark path? Where you have been for the past year or are you going to be grateful for everything you've got in your life?

"And grateful for the time you had with him.'"

The Wakefield-born star was with her fiancé until the very end as she took on the role of his carer.

She added: "That's one thing I'm grateful for as well because it was in lockdown nobody was allowed to take care of him so I had to have a crash course in nursing.

"Ryan, the lovely district nurse, thank you Ryan, came and showed me how to do everything because it was lung cancer, they were so afraid he was going to get Covid that I took over everything.

"That was a privilege. At first I thought 'How on earth am I going to do that? I don't know how to do this', but then you get a strength when you're nursing your loved one.

"It really is a privilege. I learnt how to do it, I changed all the dressings, I cared for him and I nursed him, and I glad I did."

Jane decided to keep Ed's ill health out of the public eye, but shared the devastating news on her Instagram in April 2021.

She told her 120k followers: "It is with immense sadness that we share the news that Jane’s beloved long term partner, Ed, passed away on Friday 26th March.

"He had been battling lung cancer for the last few months. We would like to thank everyone for all their help and support during this very difficult time, especially the NHS staff and the wonderful team at The Wakefield Hospice.

"The funeral took place earlier today and we would please ask for your kindness in observing Jane’s privacy for her and Ed’s family at this sad time."

Jane was previously married to Henrik Brixen between 1998 and 2003.
