Co-star Zara McDermott claims the former couple became embroiled in a heated verbal argument after seeing each other for the first time since their bitter split.
It's after Charlie was caught cheating on Ellie with another woman he had been taking on dates behind his girlfriend's back.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun Online, Zara teased about the confrontation in scenes to be aired on December 17.
"There's definitely drama", said 22-year-old Zara.
"I don't particularly get on well with Charlie.
"I was so mad when he split with Ellie and I was even more mad after the Christmas Reunion.
"I can't say too much, but tensions did run very high.
"It was really hard for me because when Ellie and Charlie did have a conversation – well, it wasn't really a conversation…
"As a best friend, when someone is attacking them, you want to go in and defend them and say 'how dare you say that'.
"But at the same time I couldn't get too involved, so it was hard to find a balance.
"I just advised her on what was the best thing to say."
It's set to be an awkward reunion since most of the couples parted ways just weeks after the ITV2 show ended.
Zara is still head over heels with her boyfriend Adam Collard who she recently moved in with.
Other couples still going strong include Megan Barton Hanson and Wes Nelson and Kaz Crossley and Josh Denzel.
Show winners Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham split up last week after a series of rows, as revealed by The Sun Online.
Despite Dani confirming the split by posting to fans on Instagram, the pair quickly reunited.
Their own reality series, a joint presenting partnership for the National Television Awards and the upcoming Christmas special was all at risk once they announced their break up.
It sparked rumours that their kiss and make up was more about trying to make it work for "commercial reasons".
Meanwhile Sam Bird swore after seeing his ex Georgia Steel walk in late to the massive mansion where the reunion was held.
Zara added: "One of the main purposes was to let everyone air their thoughts and feelings.
"We all came together and said we've been through a lot.
"It's been an incredible six months. It was a good way to put everything to bed.
"It did end on a nice note, which will be good for everyone to see.
"I don't know if Ellie and Charlie are on good terms.. but they're civil now."
- Love Island: The Christmas Reunion is on ITV2 on Monday at 9pm.
