The latest instalment of the popular CBS drama wrapped up with a bang as former NCIS team leader Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) was almost caught in a deadly explosion. With his boat destroyed and his current whereabouts unknown, veteran writer Christopher J. Waild has teased his miraculous return with his latest updates on Twitter.

The writer of the upcoming season premiere of NCIS, Christopher J. Waild, has hinted at a possible Gibbs sighting from behind the scenes of the new episode.

Season 19 will begin in September, a few months after Gibbs was last seen swimming away from the wreckage of his new boat, ‘Rule 91’.

Recent reports have confirmed series lead Mark Harmon will be taking on a reduced role in the upcoming season.

Initially planning to exit the show after 18 seasons, Harmon caught wind of CBS’ plans to axe NCIS if he wasn’t involved going forward.

Thankfully, the star managed to finalise a new deal, and will be returning part-time for the next year as two new regulars, Gary Cole and Katrina Law, make themselves at home.

It’s currently unknown just how many episodes ex-Special Agent in Charge Gibbs will be appearing in during NCIS’ 2021-22 season.

However, the latest updates from screenwriter Waild indicates he could be making an appearance as early as the season premiere.

He recently took to Twitter to tease his followers with a series of baffling images from the set of 19×1.

Waild’s first post featured a speedometer, which fans assumed is for the pickup truck Gibbs has been using since the fourth season.

His caption read: “Has a few miles, but still purrs like a kitten.”

The near 200,000m mileage is a strong indicator that Gibbs will be making a hasty getaway in his trusty rust bucket in the upcoming season opener.

One fan theorised: “I’m just asking…this your car or…is this supposed to be Gibbs’ pickup?”

Later, the writer paid a visit to a location that was extremely reminiscent of the lake where Gibbs’ boat blew up.

“In the weeds on Day Four…” he teased, which some took to mean Gibbs will spend a portion of the episode hiding in the foliage.

Another Twitter user speculated: “Maybe Gibbs crawling through the weeds to sneak out of the lake?”

“Is this where we find out what happens after the explosion?” asked one more fan. “Can’t wait!”

Though Gibbs will only be making sporadic appearances throughout the new season, it would certainly make sense for him to play a major role in the premiere.

In addition to last May’s explosive cliffhanger, Gibbs and his new partner Marcie Warren (Pam Dawber) still have a serial killer to track down.

His indefinite suspension will most likely tee up his eventual departure from the series, potentially with newcomer Gary Cole poised to replace him.

Even so, long term fans are still looking forward to at least one more season of Gibbs before he settles into his long overdue retirement.

NCIS season 19 will premiere on Monday, September 20 on CBS.
