Netflix has unveiled a first-look at period drama Medici: The Magnificent starring Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean and Teen Wolf’s Daniel Sharman.
The show is the follow-up to Medici: Masters of Florence, which starred Bodyguard’s Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman.
The second season of the Italian drama, which is set in 15th century Florence, takes place 20 years after the first season and is set in the heart of the Renaissance through one of the most important historical figures of all times, Lorenzo the Magnificent. An attempt on Piero de Medici’s life forces his son Lorenzo, played Sharman, to assume leadership of the family-run bank. Once in power, young Lorenzo, nicknamed The Magnificent, resolves to do things differently, which swiftly brings him into conflict with the head of Florence’s other powerful banking family, Jacopo Pazzi, played by Bean, who will stop at nothing to defeat Lorenzo The Magnificent.
The cast also includes Sarah Parish (Broadchurch), Bradley James (Merlin), Alessandra Mastronardi (Master of None), Synnøve Karslen (Clique), Raoul Bova (The Tourist) and Julian Sands (Gotham).
Direction of the eight episodes was divided between Jon Cassar, former director and producer of the series 24, and Jan Maria Michelini (Medici: Masters of Florence). Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, The Man in the High Castle) is executive-producing with CEO of Lux Vide, Luca Bernabei (Devils).
The series will launch on Netflix in the U.S. and the UK territories on Friday 25th January 2019, is produced by Lux Vide, and made in collaboration with RAI, Big Light Productions and Altice Group.
