Rugby player Ugo, 38, was partnered with Strictly Come Dancing favourite Oti Mabuse in the 2021 series of the hit BBC show. He was eliminated in week five of the competition, and although he enjoyed the experience, he opened up about “horrible memories” associated with one dance in particular, the Samba. Speaking on Morning Live on Thursday, he refused to be a part of the show’s Strictly fitness segment after Gethin Jones invited him to stay.

Speaking to Morning Live hosts Gethin Jones and A Question Of Sport colleague Sam Quek, Ugo reflected on his time on the show.

“My kids enjoyed it, they thought that it was silly,” he explained.

As a clip was shown of him and Oti dancing in colourful outfits to the Samba, he added: “But you know the Samba was amazing.

“I remember going down and chatting to Vicky Gill and Ezra, and the costume department, and it’s week one and they’re like, ‘we’ll ease you into Strictly’, next thing I’m dressed as the Pink Panther, and I was like ‘how is this easing me into anything?'”

He continued: “Moana, with the wig and the grass skirt.

“I just think if you are going to do a show like Strictly, which is the biggest on telly, you have to throw yourself at it and that’s exactly what I did, I loved it.

“I was challenged, I look back at that show with so many fond memories.

“I spoke to Oti the other day on FaceTime and you know, we’ve still stayed connected and we’ll maybe get a bit of dancing in, in 2022.”

Gethin commented: “Well, hang around for a bit of Strictly fitness at the end of the show if you like it, we’re doing the Samba later.”

After initially giving Gethin the thumbs up, he quickly changed his mind.

The sportsman added: “Oh no, actually, I might just have a time out on the Samba. Brings back horrible memories, wow.”

“That delay added to the drama there,” Gethin laughed.

Oti has won two series’ of Strictly Come Dancing in the past.

In 2019, she and actor Kelvin Fletcher danced their way to the final ended up winning.

Then in the 2020 series, Oti and comedian Bill Bailey also lifted the Glitterball trophy.

It seems the 31-year-old could be headed for a career change though, as she seems to be moving towards judging roles.

Last year, she was a judge on The Masked Dancer, spin-off show of ITV’s The Masked Singer.

She will also be judging this year’s Dancing On Ice, which lands on ITV this weekend.

Furthermore, her sister Motsi Mabuse, 40, judges Strictly Come Dancing alongside Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke.

Morning Live airs weekdays at 9.15am on BBC One.
