Since its premiere on Starz in 2014, Outlander became a huge hit and gained tons of fans across the world, many of whom were readers of its novel series written by Diana Gabaldon.
The series became such a success, it received a number of awards and actress Caitríona Balfe reflected and shared her reaction when she heard about its multiple nominations.

Outlander followed the life of World War II nurse Claire Fraser (played by Caitríona Balfe) as she journeyed through time after discovering she could time travel.

With themes of love, war and tradition, the series saw her fall in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), despite being married to Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) in the 20th century.

The drama series also explored real-life events such as the Jacobite risings of the 18th-century, the Second World War and colonial North Carolina on the eve of the American Revolution.

As the show is set in Scotland, it also brought light to Scottish old age traditions, this was seen in season one, during Claire and Jamie’s wedding.

Although Claire was English she took part in the traditional act where she and Jamie both received small cuts to the wrists and bound them together.

After reciting their vows, she had to repeat a statement in Gaelic which translated to ‘you are blood of my blood and bone of my bone.’

Elsewhere in season four, during Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and Brianna MacKenzie (Sophie Skelton) wedding they showed them partake in Ceilidh – a Scottish tradition of dancing to Gaelic folk music at social events.

This was a huge reason for the series becoming a hit as viewers enjoyed the combined aspect of travel, tradition and the true events which were often portrayed.

Outlander and its cast eventually went on to become nominated for a Golden Globe award and during an interview with Gold Derby actress Caitríona Balfe recalled the moment she found out her co-star Tobias was nominated.

She disclosed: “We were in Scotland and we were shooting when we found out, first of all, my driver had gotten a text from someone to say that Tobias had gotten nominated and I straight away called him and we were screaming down the phone like ‘Oh My God you got nominated, this is crazy’”.

Caitríona then revealed the moment she discovered she was also up for an award: “Him and I were chatting down the phone for about 10 minutes, about 10, 15 minutes later I went into my trailer and next thing my phone when I hung up started beeping and blowing up and so I found out the show and I got nominated.”

The actress also opened up about her experience at the Golden Globe awards and described it as “wild,” she added, “situations like that it’s just such a cherry on top of all the other good things that have happened.”

She shared: “To be able to be in a room and see someone like Mark Rylance or to see Patricia Arquette, these people that I’ve looked up to all my life or be even in the category with the women that I was in, for me Viola Davis, Robin Wright and Ava Green.”

Despite her achievements, she explained she couldn’t believe she was rubbing shoulders with other stars.

Caitríona explained: “It wasn’t that long ago that myself and my friend were blagging our way into an after, after party like three years ago.”

She added: “It’s wild when you think in a short space of time that you’ve gone from that to then being inside and sitting there for a legitimate reason and for doing something that you love, I mean that’s just insane.”

The series went on to win multiple People’s Choice Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Caitríona received a BAFTA Scotland award in 2016.

In June it was announced season six was officially in production after a setback due to Covid 19, fans will also be glad to hear network bosses renewed the series for season seven.

Outlander season six will premiere early 2022 on Starz in the USA. The UK release date is still to be confirmed.
