What a week it’s been for Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) in Emmerdale.
Last week, the beloved character was saved by Marlon (Mark Charnock), who had worked out that Paddy wanted to end his life after months of depression and isolation.
In the aftermath, Marlon has struggled. He misses his chatty pal and wants him to talk about what’s on his mind but, up until tonight, Paddy hasn’t wanted to talk.
It was something Liam (Jonny McPherson) pointed out when the lock-in at the pub got underway. He explained that if Paddy isn’t ready to speak about what’s on his mind, then that’s okay because eventually, he more than likely will be.
The first few hours of the evening were difficult for them. There were moments that made it clear men sometimes don’t know how to talk about a sensitive subject and usually joke and laugh to cover things up.
However, when Liam opened up to his friends about his attempt at ending his life when he was in medical school, things started to slowly change.
In the backroom, Paddy was overhearing the conversation and decided to join everyone.
When Cain (Jeff Hordley) got up and opened the dart board, there was the same thought in just about everybody’s mind – this isn’t going to help, now is not the time for darts.
However, we know from Liam and his love for his allotment that often doing a physical activity helps men to talk – and it worked.
As Paddy took to the dart board, Bob (Tony Audenshaw) made a joke, telling him he’d get a fiver if he gets a double top.
Paddy did his round and sat down shortly after as his friends noticed one thing.
He was ready.
A tearful Paddy said that after Chas’ (Lucy Pargeter) affair was revealed, he didn’t think he had a future. He genuinely believed the next part of his life would be doing something to end it.
He then explained that after he took Chas to the cottage that Al (Michael Wildman) had bought for them, the journey home saw him experience suicidal ideations for the first time.
Searching for a lighter moment, Bob realised that Paddy had got double top on the dartboard after all – but his wallet was empty.
