Peaky Blinders season 5 trailer released as Tommy Shelby faces a new threat

The BBC has released the first trailer for Peaky Blinders season five, with new villains and dramatic explosions aplenty.

Following the premiere in Birmingham last week, the general populous has been given their first look at the highly-anticipated continuation of the stylish gangster series.

So what can we expect from season five? Judging by the trailer, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) hanging about in Westminster, dramatic explosions in a field, and an unsettling performance from newcomer Sam Claflin.

The latter plays politician Oswald Mosley in the new series, who became leader of the British Union Of Fascists in the 1930s.

The fourth season concluded with Tommy Shelby becoming an MP for Birmingham, while Michael Gray (Finn Cole) ventured to the US in search of a new life.

Show creator Steven Knight previously spoke to about the forthcoming season, teasing how it’ll kick off with the 1929 Wall Street Crash and the beginning of the Great Depression.

‘Tommy’s a politician so he bumps against some of the dark forces that were around politically at the time,’ Knight said.

‘Europe is changing, things are happening, and we wanted to put Tommy at the heart of that which was just beginning at the start of the 30s.

‘The thing with Peaky, it changes and it stays the same, the elementals I don’t mess with. It’s in Birmingham, they’re gangsters, they do what they do, nothing is going to change them.

‘They will be redeemed at some point, but that’s who they are, that’s what they do. And for Tommy becoming an MP is just another way of attaining and exercising power, and he does it in the same way Tommy always has.’

Peaky Blinders season five arrives on BBC One later this year.
