Power Book II: Ghost was the first of the spin-off series to come out following the end of the original Starz drama. Power Book II is about Tariq St Patrick (played by Michael Rainey Jr) making his own way in the world, all the while dealing with problems from the past. Season two kicked off with the almighty issue of not knowing the whereabouts of his mum Tasha St Patrick (Naturi Naughton).

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Power Book II: Ghost.

Tariq was behind the murder of his dad James “Ghost” St Patrick (Omari Hardwick) but Tasha allowed herself to be taken to prison to protect her son.

In a bid to get out, she tried to blame the killing on Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) who returned and threatened to kill her on more than one occasion.

To try and protect his mum, Tariq told the police what was happening and she was placed into the Witness Protection Programme as a result.

Unfortunately, this also meant keeping her away from Tariq who doesn’t have a clue where she is.

Season two of Power Book II: Ghost launched on Sunday, November 21 on Starz.

The series premiere received much higher ratings than the first season.

Power Book II is now ranked as the number one cable telecast among black households, according to the channel.

This could explain why the spin-off has been given an early series three renewal.

President and CEO at Starz Jeffrey Hirsch said: “The continued success and cultural resonance of the Power universe is unprecedented, and fans are clearly still hungry for more Power Book II: Ghost.

“We’re excited for the third season of the star-studded series to get into production early next year just ahead of the debut Power Book IV: Force, the fourth instalment in the rapidly expanding franchise.”

But when the drama does return for its third outing, there is going to be one major difference.

The show’s creator Courtney Kemp will no longer be leading the way as showrunner.

Instead, former Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney is going to be taking over the role for the third series.

An official reason for this hasn’t been given but as there are numerous spin-offs, Kemp may have decided to step back so she can concentrate on them.

She will still be heavily involved in the creative process though as one of the series’ executive producers.

Kemp is going to be working alongside Curtis Jackson, Mark Canton and Mahoney.

Power Book II will continue on Sunday, December 12 on Starz and Starzplay in the UK.

No details have been released so far about episode four of the latest series.

The only detail that has come out so far is that it is called Gettin’ These Ends.

Power Book II: Ghost continues every Sunday on Starz in the US and Starzplay in the UK.
