Friday 12:55PM update: With zero studio wide entries, the weekend box is Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet to own for an estimated third weekend take of $15M, -41% for what will be a running total of $139.7M.
While we were in a slightly similar situation last weekend (Screen Gem’s The Possession of Hannah Grace was the only wide release at 2,065 locations), interestingly enough the frame wasn’t the lowest grossing-one of the year with total ticket sales per ComScore of $118.2M. YTD the weekend B.O. low water mark belongs to the third weekend of September, 21-23, which totaled $92.1M. Still in what is shaping up to be a record year at the domestic box office with north of $11.4 billion, that wasn’t a bad low when you consider that four weekends in 2017 made less than $90M each with the penultimate weekend of summer, Aug. 25-27 bottoming out with $69.3M.
At this time, if Ralph 2‘s grosses keep up, by Sunday through three weekends it’s total will be 3% ahead of Coco at the same point in time (final domestic was $209.7M) and 3% behind Moana (final stateside $248.7M). Ralph 2‘s Friday is looking like $3.5M.
Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch will stay put in second with $2.9M today, $12.5M in weekend 5, -30%, and a running total of $220.8M. MGM/New Line’s Creed II follows in third with $9M in weekend 3, -46%, for a total by Sunday of $95M, pacing 20% ahead of Creed at same point in B.O. cycle (final domestic $109.7M).
There’s an assortment of specialty fare opening, i.e. Focus Features’ Mary Queen of Scots, Roadside Attractions Ben Is Back, and NEON’s Vox Lux. We’ll have updates on those grosses later. Universal also has the 25th anniversary re-release of Oscar winner Schindler’s List at 781 theaters.
