Riverdale theories: Cheryl is behind the ‘Barchie’ romance – here’s how

Riverdale residents suffered a huge loss this season. Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse) was supposedly killed off by his friends Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa). While this was a little too crazy to believe, it eventually turned out to be untrue.

The team decided to create a show for the town and fake Jughead’s death to pull the wool over the Quill & Skull society.

This was a plan brought to the next stage by none other than Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), when she exposed the Barchie kiss.

As perhaps one of the more nefarious characters in the show, Cheryl’s role was to shine a light on their affair.

However, fans have now begun suggesting Cheryl’s involvement was not entirely for the greater good.

  • Camila Mendes net worth: How much is Riverdale star worth?

Reddit user RevolutionarySnow has pointed this theory out, and suggested it was to bring the fabled “Barchie” relationship together.

Barchie is of course the fan-favourite theory that Betty and Archie would get together instead of with Jughead and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes).

The fan questioned: “What if the Showmance is Cheryl’s plotting…

“Ok. I have been thinking. What if the Showmance is the culmination of Cheryl plotting in her belief that Barchie was not faking their kiss or feelings for one another, which she suggests to other people to plant doubt in one another.”

As viewers will remember, Archie and Betty were enthralled in a sordid relationship during the Jughead death ploy.

But RevolutionarySnow has suggested Cheryl thought the pair were already eager to get together, and she planted their kiss in the plan to ignite their potentially adulterous ways.

The fan continued: “This would explain many of the scenes (i.e. Veronica losing it and tossing everything off Archie’s desk, Betty looking like she is consoling and reassuring Jughead) that the writers have been posting.

“However, it does plant the seeds for Barchie that the writers ultimately show through the window scene, in which Betty and Archie have been the victims of Cheryl’s plan.”

They concluded: “However, there are some unresolved feelings that Betty and Archie finally need to consider… Just a thought.”

Viewers already saw a spell of this during an unexpected texting scene, which saw the pair flirting over their supposedly faked kiss.

Meanwhile, viewers have recently pointed out Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) made an appearance back in season three.

Reddit user aranderson2003 posted: “Toni commented on Chuck’s ‘Sticky Maple’ post about Veronica, a full season before she appears on screen.”

However, other viewers pointed out the spelling of the name, and suggested it could have been an entirely different character.

They wrote: “No she didn’t. That says Tony Topaz. Could be a random dude for all we know.”

Another fan joked about this, adding: “Continuity? In Riverdale? Dear Lord, can’t we trust anything in these trying times?”

Riverdale airs on The CW in the US on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Netflix UK.
