Matt Tebbutt welcomed chef Freddy Bird, food writer and author Meera Sodha, drinks expert Helen McGinn, and special guest comedian and actor Miles Jupp to BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen today. However, the host didn’t appear too happy about his quiet guests.
After Matt introduced today’s guests, he showed the audience photos from viewers who had attempted to recreate his dishes.
Pointing to the delicious looking dishes, Matt was clearly expecting the photos to receive applause, saying: “The studio is very quiet today.”
Turning to his guests, he asked: “Are we all switched on? This isn’t down time.”
As the host showed the next photo, Meera, Freddy, and Miles all whooped and cheered.
As Miles began clapping very enthusiastically in response to Matt’s prior comment, the presenter remarked: “Thank God for the pro.”
He added: “Let’s keep that coming in.”
Viewers were quick to take to Twitter to comment on the sleepy bunch, and many were enjoying the relaxed guests.
One person wrote: “They are all so delirious on #saturdaykitchen this morning.
“They been on the p*** or still on it from last night? Matt is glowing,” they concluded. [sic]
Another said: “What is going on today #SaturdayKitchen. Miles MUST be drunk.
“The other bloke is definitely drunk. I wonder about Matt. It’s possibly the best show, EVER.”
However, it appears the intense UK heat and more relaxed last few days was the true culprit of the laidback guests.
As Matt said good morning to Helen, he joked: “You’re looking very smiley, was that the paddleboarding this morning?”
Helen laughed, replying: “No, it was the rosé.”
Matt was also quick to point out that chef Freddy was “looking very casual today”.
The studio laughed as Freddy responded: “Yep, I’m dressed very casual today. Ready for the beach!”
Freddy explained his dish, saying: “We’ve got pork chops with a butcher’s sauce, which is a lovely gelatinous sauce made with chicken stock and cognac.
“[There’s also] a lot of lovely dill and capers to cut through everything, so it’s actually a lot lighter than it sounds.”
A relaxed Matt said: “You’re making me feel sleepy already.”
Later joking: “That’s what I wanted to eat in 30 degree heat.”
“Just to top it off we’ve got some mashed potatoes,” Freddy replied, and Matt sarcastically exclaimed: “Brilliant!”
“Brilliant, we’ve got a big side order of carbohydrates,” stated Miles, as the studio erupted with laughter.
“Fortunately, Meera is here to lighten the load,” Matt continued.
Matt and Miles seemed relieved that Meera would be serving them a cold peanut noodle dish today.
She laughed with Matt, saying: “Just a bit of a contrast.”
Miles delivered his verdict on the two dishes and said: “Sounds good but they do sound incredibly heavy though.
“I think most of us will pass out right around the 40 minute mark!”
Despite the heat making them all sleepy, the guests all enjoyed the food greatly.
Saturday Kitchen Live airs every Saturday at 10am on BBC One.
