The Good Doctor season three concluded earlier this year which saw the end of one of the drama’s most popular characters. ABC has confirmed The Good Doctor will be back for a fourth season. The cast and crew were supposed to start filming the new episodes last month but it has not been officially confirmed to have started.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Good Doctor.
The Good Doctor is about Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore), an autistic surgeon who gets employed at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.
The show focuses on him trying to be the best surgeon he can be while learning more about communication and developing his personal life.
Fans have also been able to get to know his colleagues including Dr Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) and Dr Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas).
While the show is often soppy and not as dramatic as some of America’s other popular shows, it has proven to be a major success.
The Good Doctor first started on ABC back in 2017 and since then has had two more seasons with a fourth on its way.
According to the 14th International TV Audience Awards, held in Monte Carlo last year, The Good Doctor was the most watched TV drama series in the world.
In 2018, 47.7 million people around the globe watched the series starring actor Highmore.
But The Good Doctor wasn’t originally intended to air on ABC when it was first made.
Why did CBS reject The Good Doctor twice?
Hawaii Five-0 and Lost star Daniel Dae Kim is an Executive Producer on The Good Doctor and was the one behind bringing it to life.
After seeing the original version of the medical drama in South Korea shortly after it started in 2013, Kim knew he wanted to recreate it for US fans.
So he got the rights for his new production company and started adapting it.
As he was a star of the CBS series Hawaii Five-0, he wanted to give it to the network.
However, after looking at the script, CBS decided against having a pilot for The Good Doctor commissioned.

Since it was turned down, neither Kim or the network has opened up about exactly why CBS didn’t want The Good Doctor.
Speaking to The New York Times about the rejection, Kim said: “CBS actually passed on it twice.
“That was really unfortunate to me, because they were my home studio.
“I really wanted to bring something home to them.”
Thankfully though, Kim did not give up and got back the rights for The Good Doctor from CBS.
Kim continued working on the series and showrunner David Shore, the creator of Fox’s medical drama House, was brought in.
Once he got involved, The Good Doctor started to attract interest from networks besides from CBS.
This then eventually led to Kim and Shore partnering up with ABC to bring the drama to television screens around the world.
The Good Doctor is available to watch on ABC.
