Jodie Whittaker has quit Doctor Who and will leave the beloved show during the next series, according to reports.
The 38-year-old actress joined the sci-fi series as its first-ever female Doctor in 2017, however, it’s been claimed she’s kissing goodbye to the Tardis and the franchise in season 13.
Although the BBC won’t comment on the rumours surrounding Jodie’s future on the programme, many fans are wondering who could be the next actor to play the Time Lord.
Here are the stars tipped to take over the iconic role.
Michaela Coel
I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum creator Michaela Coel is being tipped 5/1 to be the next Doctor.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes told us: ‘There’s a long list of blockbuster names ready to takeover Jodie Whittaker but as things stand its Michaela Coel who leads the way in the betting.’
The actress, who has also previously starred in Black Mirror, is no stranger to being linked to Doctor Who.
In 2017, she tweeted she definitely wasn’t the new Doctor – although many people thought this was a double bluff.
‘I’m just tweeting for the second time that I am not Doctor Who. Don’t place bets on it and lose cash, I beg,’ she wrote.
Richard Ayoade
Richard Ayoade has long been rumoured to become the next Doctor, with Ladbrokes tipping him at 6/1 for the role.
The IT Crowd comedian possesses a quirky personality that would make him a great fit for the titular character.
Ahead of Jodie being announced as the next Doctor three years ago, Richard jokingly tweeted: ‘Can’t wait to find out if I’m Doctor Who! Fingers crossed!’
Could 2-21 be his big moment?
Jo Martin
Jo Martin appeared in series 12 of Doctor Who where she was revealed to be a past incarnation of the Doctor.
She was the first non-white actor and second woman to play the Time Lord.
Many fans have been calling for the actress to take over the role and play the 14th Doctor.
‘If it’s true Jodie is leaving Doctor Who, please can we have Jo Martin replace her. Or is that too obvious?’ wrote one on Twitter.
Echoing a similar sentiment, another pleaded: ‘Jo Martin needs to be the next Dr! Make this happen!’
Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is being tipped by Ladbrokes at 8/1 for the Time Lord takeover.
The Fleabag creator, who recently starred alongside Harry Styles in his new music video, previously teased she could be up for the job.
When asked about the Doctor Who role in 2017, Phoebe said: ‘I am… not allowed to say anything about that, one way or the other.
‘Um… It’d be cool, but… I might be doing other stuff.’
Could 2021 be her time to shine?
John Boyega
Star Wars’ John Boyega is being tipped by the bookies 10/1 to reanimate as the next Time Lord.
He previously praised the show’s casting of Jodie, saying that he was ‘so proud’ that she was the first female Doctor.
However, when asked at Google Pixel 3 Curiosity Rooms whether he would ever appear on the franchise, he responded: ‘I don’t know about Doctor Who but I would love to work with her again.’
Kris Marshall
Kris Marshall was a favourite for the role of the 13th Doctor in 2017 as well as favourite to play Jodie’s companion after she was announced.
And now, the actor, who has starred in Love Actually and Death In Paradise, is being tipped once again to join the cast as the lead role.
Is it finally time for Kris to step into the Tardis?
