TWD fans have been waiting throughout the ongoing coronavirus pandemic for the tenth thrilling season to come to an end.
Following delays on episode 16, A Certain Doom’s post-production, the finale will air as a special one-off episode on Sunday, October 4.
After that, the series’ confirmed 11th season will bring the mainline story to a close sometime next year.
However, devoted viewers were thrilled to discover the world of TWD will continue with a number of new spin-off series.
Fans are already anticipating the return of Fear the Walking Dead, as well as the premiere of previously announced follow-up The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
Now it’s also been confirmed Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) will return in his own spin-off, while a trilogy of films centred on former lead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) are still in the works.
Moreover, the pre-outbreak histories of some new and familiar characters are set to be explored in the upcoming anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead.
So far, AMC have not been able to confirm when the new instalment will hit screens or which characters will form the main cast.
Despite the series remaining a mystery, speculation indicates ‘Tales’ is being positioned as a way to return some of TWD’s most beloved characters to the screen, without the stars committing to an entire series.
Since leaving TWD, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Michael Rooker have all become major stars, and are all likely contenders to feature in the new anthology.
Meanwhile, some unearthed comments from former main cast member Michael Cudlitz have suggested Abraham Ford could make his first full appearance since his death in 2016.
Although Abraham made a couple of cameos in TWD’s signature hallucinatory sequences, he was killed by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) alongside Glenn (Steven Yeun) in the divisive season seven premiere.

However, Cudlitz’s appearance on Strahan and Sara has fans speculating Abraham is one of the most likely characters to make an appearance in the new spin-off.
When asked about Abraham’s return, he said: “The way they tell stories is through flashbacks and origin stories.
“So there’s still characters on the show that were very close with Abraham that he had history with, so it could very easily go back.”
With just one more round of the main TWD series to go, it’s unlikely Cudlitz will make a guest appearance in the upcoming 11th season.
But, as ‘Tales’ will be comprised almost entirely of flashbacks before the zombie outbreak, there’s a good chance Michael Cudlitz was at the top of the list of former stars to call back for a surprise cameo.
He continued: “They’re also doing other movies which are going to move in time — go back in time, go forward in time — and I believe pair up characters that weren’t necessarily paired up in the graphic novels.
The star then tantalisingly signed off: “A strong, subtle yes. Very, very possible.”
The Walking Dead, A Certain Doom will air Sunday, October 4 on AMC and the following Monday on Fox.
