In scenes that will air tonight, John Dundas, 28, and Gemma Stanfield, 21, from Glasgow took on Danny Dyer’s new game show, The Wall – and walked away with a “life-changing” amount of money. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the newly engaged couple explained they want to plan their dream wedding and treat their family with their newfound fortune.
The aim of the game is that the contestants get given a question and as the three balls drop down The Wall, they have to lock in an answer before the first ball reaches the money.
If the contestants get the question right, the balls turn green and if they get it wrong the balls turn red.
Business development manager John and banking consultant Gemma admitted that they almost missed out on winning the big jackpot and feared they would walk away with nothing.
“At the start of the game we got this bar sequence wrong,” Gemma began. “And at that point, I was like ‘Oh my goodness I came all the way down here to go home with nothing’.
She continued: “It was nerve-wracking because when we were playing the game and you see the £50,000 and then when you see the other money build-up you just think, ‘Imagine, this would be great’.
“But the thing is with that game, with just one red ball you can lose it all. We just had to try and keep our cool throughout the game, which I think we managed to do.”
John explained: “At the first part of the game you need to win money to get to the second round.
“So, when we got the first three wrong, we were just panicking thinking ‘Oh well we could end up going home here’.”
John and Gemma, who got engaged a week before they filmed for The Wall, explained they only wanted to win enough money to treat their family.
However, they said what they walked away with, exceeded all their expectations.
“As we said we’re just ordinary people,” Gemma added. “So, I mean winning a couple of thousand pounds would have been great but what we won has just absolutely changed our life.
“We could not be more grateful. We are now able to treat our family and our mums who have given us so much over the years.”
Since winning the money in October 2020, the couple have been able to go ahead and plan their dream wedding and Gemma admitted to treating herself to a designer handbag.
Speaking about their wedding, Gemma said: “Anyone knows that having money will make the planning [of the wedding] that little bit easier as you’re not as cautious.
“Especially after the pandemic and the lockdown we just want to make sure all of our family and friends are there to celebrate with us and to make it a day to remember.”
Gemma and John’s episode will air tonight, and despite winning their fortune months ago, the couple still haven’t told their family how much they won.
John added: “We always had the impression that they wanted it to be a surprise. And the fact they are going to watch it on Saturday and have no idea.”
“We can’t wait to watch it all together,” Gemma explained. “Our mums don’t even know how much we have won.
“We always say to them ‘You’ll watch it and you’ll find out on the night. They have no idea so we can’t wait to see their reaction.”
The Wall continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
