Many of us flick through social media and apps without a care in the world, but ITV2’s new series looks at the terrifying role they can play within society.
True crime show Social Media Murders follows three distinctly different murder cases over three nights. But there’s one thing that ties the tragedies together – the chilling way in which social media brought together culprit and victim.
The first film opens the case file of British backpacker Grace Millane, who went missing during her trip to New Zealand’s Auckland in 2018, following a Tinder date the night before her 22nd birthday.
Just one week after the young girl’s disappearance, police arrested her date – Jesse Kempson, 26.
He was later charged and sentenced to life in prison for her death.
Combining CCTV footage of Grace’s last appearance with police interview tapes, the eye-opening show will look at how her killer was brought to justice, and how the case even changed laws here in Britain.
The second case focuses on Alex Rodda, who was horrifically murdered when he was just 15 years old at the hands of 18-year-old Matthew Mason in December 2019.
Mason began grooming Alex by messaging on apps like Facebook and Snapchat, before the pair embarked on a sexual relationship. But six weeks later Mason, who had a girlfriend at the time, took unforgivable actions to hide his sexuality.
Meanwhile, the last film tells the story of Molly McLaren, 23, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Joshua Stimpson in 2017.
The former couple met on Tinder but a few months into their relationship, Molly called things off, explaining that Stimpson was growing increasingly more controlling.
Then, in a cruel twist of fate, Stimpson began harassing Molly on Facebook, before using the site to track her movements. He then followed her to her gym and killed her.
Each of the three powerful films are tough to watch, but the victims’ families say that they hope they can highlight a valuable lesson that will help to change things for future generations.
