What is Peter Barlow and Carla Connor's relationship history in Corrie?

Carla was subsequently raped by Frank the night before their wedding when she confessed she was unable to marry him because of her feelings for Peter.

As Peter helped Carla in the aftermath of her rape, the pair then began an affair which was to blame for Frank ultimately being acquitted of the crime, after his mother Anne showed evidence at his trial of Carla and Peter kissing – which led to Leanne forcing a confession out of Peter in court.

Frank was subsequently murdered with Carla initially being arrested on suspicion of the crime – although Anne later confessed to having done the deed.

Carla and Peter later married in December 2013, although matters were further complicated by Peter having an affair with Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan), and Carla’s subsequent pregnancy, all of which culminated in the discovery of his infidelity, and Tina’s murder in 2014.

The stress of everything caused Carla – whose brother Rob Donovan was eventually charged with killing Tina – to suffer a miscarriage.

With Peter leaving Weatherfield for Portsmouth, Carla eventually moved on from him, starting a relationship with Nick Tilsley in 2016. The pair married but their union was short-lived with their marriage being annulled after he found out that Carla had slept with Tracy (Kate Ford)’s ex-husband Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill) behind his back.

This came back to bite Carla when, following her brother Aidan (Shayne Ward)’s suicide, Peter – who returned to Weatherfield in 2016 in a relationship with Leanne’s sister Toyah Battersby – ended up becoming Carla’s business partner at the factory.

It was a pretty tense partnership, unsurprisingly given Peter’s new circumstances – which ended after two months when he sold his share to Nick Tilsley – who had also recently returned to the cobbles.

The pair have become closer again of late though, with Peter attempting to support Carla in the wake of the factory collapse, which claimed Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia)’s life, confessing that they loved one another before the disaster, with Carla later confessing to Peter that she knew the roof was unsafe.

Although Peter convinced her to lie to the police – also buying Gary Windass’ silence over the situation by paying him £10,000 to keep quiet – Carla ended up confessing at a memorial service for Rana, and has been seen appearing more and more fragile ever since.

Recent scenes have seen Peter attempt to help her as her mental health grows increasingly unstable and she becomes seriously ill.

Could they have a future together? With Carla’s situation increasingly desperate it’s not yet clear what direction that might take – but no doubt all will become clear in the coming months.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
