This Morning fans were treated to a Christmas Day special of the popular ITV programme while they unwrapped their presents at home. The episode was presented by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in a studio complete with extravagant Christmas decorations. However, many viewers slammed the hosts for “pretending to be live” as the episode was pre-recorded.
Disgruntled viewers took to Twitter to vent their frustration at ITV airing the pre-recorded special, with Lisa commenting: “This Morning pretending they are live… What is the point of them doing this show?”
Charlie Gaze fumed: “Why @ITV feel the need to show #ThisMorning on this day of days is beyond me.
“Particularly at this time of year, when it should be catering more to a family audience. Clearly, [there’s] nothing else better to air.”
@Notnuhniggie snapped: “#ThisMorning it’s absolutely ridiculous that This Morning is on Christmas Day and we all know it’s probably recorded in August or something. And it’s for two hours. Cheap TV…We’re being ripped off.”
Lisa added: “People are thinking this is live. Please! Do you honestly think they’d give up their Christmas Day to do this show? It’ll have been recorded weeks ago. #thismorning”
Michael Wyles remarked: “Two years in a row and Christmas day on @itv is basically the same as the other 364 days of the year.
“The usual morning shows followed by cooking shows. Same old shows and same old faces. What happened to Christmas Day being special and magical? #ThisMorning”
However, some viewers thoroughly enjoyed sitting down to watch the Christmas Special with Stephanie commenting: “Holly and Josie [Gibson] both look gorgeous this morning! Let’s see what these next two hours bring… #ThisMorning”
During the fun-filled instalment, Holly and Phillip welcomed a host of special guests, including singing stars Aled Jones and Leona Lewis.
Viewers were also treated to some festive cooking from Gino D’Acampo and some Christmas cracker jokes from Gyles Brandreth.
Gino appeared on the show wearing a Christmas shirt with a print of a muscular torso covered in festive lights which made Holly laugh.
She joked: “You look slightly like the turkey I got out the fridge this morning, I’m not gonna lie!”
Later on, show favourite Josie Gibson tried to teach Holly, Phillip and Gino some alternative Christmas games.
One included wearing a belt with a pen attached to it via string, then squatting over a bottle while trying to get a pen inside without touching it.
Josie wanted everyone to try the game and provided Holly, Phillip and Gino with belts, bottles and pens so they could take part.
After Holly’s turn, she burst into laughter while watching the others and said: “That’s harder than you think, have you done it yet? Is that what I look like?”
Gino, who made it clear he was not a fan of festive games, said: “In life, sometimes you have to stand back and say, ‘Sorry, but it’s not for me’. So I am happy to fail.”
It wouldn’t be Christmas without the presents, so the This Morning team sat down together to open some gifts together.
One present left Gino lost for words and Phillip became emotional as Holly had recorded him a special poem.
This Morning continues weekdays at 10am on ITV and can be watched on ITV Hub.
