Valkyrie entered the MCU through Thor: Ragnarok. Her character had chemistry with Thor, but Thompson made it known that the character is bisexual. There was a scene cut acknowledging this.
Thompson told Rolling Stone that she convinced Waititi to somehow include this aspect of her character after finding an illustration of Valkyrie kissing anthropologist Annabelle Riggs. They filmed a scene of a woman walking out of her bedroom, but it was eventually cut.
“There were things that we talked about that we allowed to exist in the characterization, but maybe not be explicit in the film,” she said referring to the scene of the murders of her warrior clan and Valkyrie mourning.
“There’s a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who’s just been slain,” Thompson said. “In my mind, that was my lover.”
Tessa Thompson is a vocal supporter of Valkyrie and Captain Marvel getting together
Fans started making art of Valkyrie and Captain Marvel together around the time of the release of Captain Marvel. Thompson and Brie Larson tweeted that they loved it and kept it going.
Eventually, Thompson pitched a spinoff. “A rom-com, like we both try to fix each other’s love lives. Everyone knows who I’m dating!” she said. Hemsworth was confused by this so Thompson explained, “I’m being shipped with Captain Marvel.”
Captain Marvel’s sexuality is unknown, but many fans think the focus of her friendship with Maria Rambeau could have led to something more. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck talked about their approach to the superhero’s story and sexuality with ComicBookMovie.
“We knew we were telling a story of self discovery and we wanted friendship, and her friendship with Maria, to be a huge part of that,” Fleck said. “There was no room for any romantic storyline for us.”
He continued, “I know people have made their own conclusions about that and I think that’s part of the fun of making these movies is that they become the audience’s movies and they get to create any kind of narrative they want for what’s happening off the screen. For us, as storytellers, it’s a friendship and a story about that and self-discovery.”
Kevin Feige confirmed there will be an LGBT storyline
Thompson revealed what she wanted for her character’s future on stage at Comic-Con. Things left off with Valkyrie becoming the new king of Asgard with Thor leaving.
“First of all, as New King, she needs to find her Queen. That would be her first order of business. She has some ideas,” the actress said. Kevin Feige also confirmed after that an LGBT storyline will be involved with her character.
“The answer is yes,” Feige told io9. “How that impacts the story remains to be seen with that level of representation you’ll see across our films, not in just Thor 4.“
Thor 4: Love and Thunder will reportedly be released on Nov. 5, 2021. That means it might take time for fans to find out more about the upcoming storyline.
