The Dutton family have already endured immeasurable loss at the start of Yellowstone’s fifth season with the death of Kayce (played by Luke Grimes) and Monica’s (Kelsey Asbille) newborn son in a horrific car accident. When Kayce turns to his father John (Kevin Costner) for help in the latest episode of the Paramount Network drama, he’s surprised to see just how receptive he is to their plans for the burial after they turned their backs on the ranch.

Main cast member Luke has revealed what John and Kayce’s tough conversation at the start of episode three, Tall Drink of Water, could mean for the Duttons going forward.

After experiencing several traumatic events on the Yellowstone Ranch, Kayce and his wife Monica departed to start their own plot of land with their son Tate (Brecken Merrill).

At the start of the fifth season, Monica is pregnant with their second child, but the baby tragically dies shortly after he’s born following a devastating car crash.

Monica and Kayce name him after John, but he sadly doesn’t live much longer than an hour in the world.

Unsure how his father will react, Kayce is relieved to discover his father is happy with their plans to bury the baby on the ranch where they can come back and visit.

“Once again we’re with Kayce where he does not know what to do,” Luke explained.

“Monica says she wants to have a funeral. It’s really sweet to me to sort of read and play Kayce just doing his best.”

However, viewers were unsure how the aftermath of baby John would play out considering Kayce’s recent clashes with his father.

Thankfully, as Kevin explained: “Because it was important to Monica, whose family, it became important to me.”

Despite their differences, Kayce and Monica are still family, and having the gravesite on the ranch could indirectly bring John closer to his estranged son and daughter-in-law.

“I think that just sort of solidifies how much John has accepted Kayce’s life,” Luke went on in Paramount’s Behind the Story series.

“As sort of gruff and almost mean these characters can be to each other sometimes, they’ll surprise you with how much they love each other at the end of the day.”

John clearly still holds a deep love for his youngest child despite their differences.

Luke’s insight into the scene could also mean fans will see a lot more of the father-son pair together going forward this season.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to predict how intensely this grief will manifest in Monica, who has already had to endure so much to protect her family.

Director for the episode Cristina Alexandra Voros said: “I both greatly look forward to scenes with a deep emotional intensity and dread them a little bit.”

When the cast are friends and you understand the depths they have to go to reach these feelings in a really honest and vulnerable way, you don’t want to do that to a friend.

“Kelsey has had to go to these really dark places over and over and over again.”

“Monica’s beliefs have been shaken,” Kelsey added. “She’s in a place of, ‘Why is this happening?’”

Kayce has to step back and let his wife process her trauma for the time being, but what could another death in the family at such a tragically young age mean for the Duttons?

Yellowstone season 5 continues Sundays on the Paramount Network and the following Monday on Paramount+.
