A pair of escaped Rottweilers in California mauled and killed a 2-year-old boy in his front yard, according to officials.
The boy, who was identified as Jaysiah Chavez, was in front of his Fresno home on Friday morning when the dogs dug out of their owner’s yard and pounced, YourCentralValley.com reported.
Jaysiah’s grandmother reportedly tried to fight off the Rottweilers and was also bitten. His grandfather ultimately fended off the animals before authorities were called to the home, police said.
Responding officers performed CPR on the boy to no avail, according to the report. They rushed him to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The dogs were chased down near the home and turned over to the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The SPCA confirmed both dogs are set to be euthanized.
The tot’s family broke their silence Tuesday as they prepare funeral arrangements for him.
“We feel like we’re in a dream right now,” his uncle, Ayden Palmerin, told the site. “It’s just hard to fathom right now. A little boy passing especially the way he passed. It’s just terrible.”
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for his memorial.
“Jaysiah was a lovable little boy,” according to the fundraising page. “He laughed and smiled, bringing joy and happiness to everyone he touched.”
