BBC unveils plan to promote black and ethnic minority staff as ‘senior leaders’ to create more ‘inclusive’ organisation – as June Sarpong becomes Director of Creative Diversity

The BBC has unveiled plans to promote black and ethnic minority staff as ‘senior leaders’ in order to create a more ‘inclusive’ organisation, as the broadcaster vows to become ‘more representative of the UK’.

The corporation’s boss, Tony Hall outlined the plan, with the company having previously announced the appointment of June Sarpong as Director of Creative Diversity.

In an email to staff today, Hall proposed the strategy of the BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) talent, with the subject heading of the email entitled ‘Going further in building a creative, inclusive BBC’.

Hall penned: ‘We can’t be the creative, inclusive organisation we want to be if we’re not representative of the whole of the UK.

‘We’re making some good progress, but we want to do more, particularly in relation to senior leaders.’

He said they had taken immediate action to promote a generation of talented leaders that they believe will bring the ‘diversity we need’.

In a statement, the BBC said: ‘We have committed to having at least two BAME members on every senior leadership group by the end of 2020. Several leadership teams have already achieved the target for BAME representation, including the Executive Committee, Radio & Education and Finance, and there is still more to come.

‘Our leaders have a crucial role to play in creating a truly inclusive culture throughout the organisation, so getting things right at this level is vital if we are to build the very best BBC for our audiences.’

Earlier this week it was also reported that the broadcaster had also promised a larger representation of disabled people on screen.

The BBC put out a statement from June Sarpong today which highlighted the Creative Diversity Festival

In October, June Sarpong was appointed as the firm’s first Creative Diversity Director. Part of her role will see her putting on a ‘festival of creative diversity’.

In a statement, June said: ‘These bold inclusive steps are part of a much wider long-term effort by the BBC to ensure that all talent regardless of background can progress and contribute to the best of their ability.

‘The Creative Diversity Festival will leverage the convening power of the BBC to bring together the best BAME creatives with the industry as a whole and deliver real results and change – it will be a vibrant event where ideas from BAME talent can be bought and sold. I look forward to working with people across the creative industry to help make inclusion the norm.’
