The troubled Daily News keeps cranking out bloopers. On its website May 16, it changed both the first name and the gender of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a photo caption on the new TWA Hotel at JFK Airport.
A boring grip-and-grin photo shows Tyler Morse, CEO of hotel owner and operator MCR, shaking hands with Cuomo — but in the caption he is identified as “Governor Marion Cuomo.”
As New Yorkers know, Andrew is the son of former Governor Mario Cuomo, which would have been a more forgivable blooper.
Airports are giving lots of trouble to the fly-by-night copy editors.
A May 14 print-edition editorial about the LaGuardia Airport renovation both praised and panned Gov. Cuomo. But in the headline, it read: “Great Mayor, Terrible Airport.” But there was no mention of any mayor in the short editorial, suggesting the headline writer mixed up Mayor Bill de Blasio with Gov. Cuomo.
The Daily News in July chopped its newsroom in half to about 40 people, and many of the copy-editing functions once handled by hard-nosed news veterans in New York were shipped off to a universal copy desk in Chicago handling all papers in the Tribune Publishing chain.
