The dog, nicknamed Florence by RSPCA staff, was found covered in faeces from the inside of a dirty crate.
She was rushed to the vet, who found she had a dead puppy inside her ruptured uterus.

Florence, a white bulldog, is thought to be aged between two and four years old.
She was found in an alleyway in Finsbury Park, north London, with faeces all over her and a cut to the side of her face.
She remains in a serious condition, but the dog is being treated with medication.

The RSPCA believe it was most likely that the dog was giving birth when she was abandoned.
A member of the public found the dog and raised the alarm.
RSPCA officer Nicola Thomas, who found Florence, said she couldn’t tell what colour the dog was supposed to be when she first found her.
She said: ‘Dumping a dog for any reason is heartbreaking, but to think that this girl was so poorly and also in the midst of labour is just tragic.
‘The long dark alleyway is extremely difficult to find and leads to a park area, so it could be that the person who dumped poor Florence could be local and knows the area.
‘It is also clear that Florence has had numerous puppies in the past and was probably a breeding dog, so therefore if anyone thinks they have had a puppy from her we would also urge them to get in touch.

The animal hospital staff describe the dog as friendly, despite her ‘heartbreaking ordeal’.
A spokesman for the hospital said: ‘When she came into us we did an ultrasound that showed the presence of a dead foetus in her uterus.
‘Sadly it is most likely she was having difficulty giving birth when she was abandoned.
‘If she had been seen by a vet sooner they could have intervened and maybe helped and saved her pup’.
