Prabhu Ramamoorthy, an Indian national who was visiting the states on a work visa, was convicted after he sexually assaulted the woman on an overnight trip from Las Vegas to Detroit.
He was in the middle seat with his wife sat on one side and his victim sat by the window.
Ramamoorthy, who was 34 at the time, unbuttoned the 22-year-old woman’s shirt and put his hand down her trousers, ABC News reported.
The victim is said to have woken up with Ramamoorthy sexually assaulting her.
Prosecutors called it a “brazen assault” and are seeking an 11-year jail term.
Defence attorneys are seeking a prison sentence of less than 10 years, arguing Ramamoorthy’s “life as he knew it is over”.
He will eventually be deported because of the conviction.
