Piers Morgan has tried to convince Ben Stokes to support Arsenal after the cricket star pledged his allegiance to their Tottenham rivals.

Stokes, 28, revealed on Twitter he had ‘never loved football enough’ to support a particular team, despite being given a Spurs shirt as a boy.

But after the team sent him his own jersey with ‘Stokes 55’ on the back, he is now ‘officially a Spurs fan’.

Fuming at the news, devoted Arsenal fan Piers decided to have a go at convincing him to swap sides.

On Good Morning Britain today he produced a similar ‘Stokes 55’ for the cricket star – but in Arsenal’s red and white instead of Tottenham’s white and blue.

He said: ‘While I was away, Ben Stokes was on the programme. It was amazing.

‘I fell in love with Ben Stokes. There was adoration pouring out of my every pore.’

Describing Stokes’s phenomenal third test Ashes victory, he said: ‘The guy is on fire. Ben Stokes played the greatest innings in the history of the game.’

But then continued: ‘Then on Friday, my hero, the man I love more than life itself, said he was a Tottenham fan.

‘But Ben, as you know from Headingley, it’s not over until the fat lady sings. And this fat man is singing. The Stokes 55 Arsenal shirt is coming your way.’

When co-host Susanna Reid began to tease him, Piers added: ‘He’s not a proper Tottenham fan, he’s just been seduced by them.

‘Tottenham have not won the league in my lifetime. And I’m not a young man. Ben, you need to reconsider.’

Arsenal came back from 2-0 with goals from Lacazette and Aubameyang to draw 2-2 at the Emirates in the North London Derby yesterday.

Piers described the two goals as ‘better than sex’.

Stokes’ 135 not out during the third Ashes test at Headingley saw England successfully chase down Australia’s target of 359 runs with just one wicket remaining, despite being bowled out for 69 in their first innings.

He was sent the Spurs jersey by the team on Friday, commenting on Twitter: ‘Never supported a club, always wanted to but never loved football enough really, my first ever football top was actually a Tottenham one, it was the blue and yellow kit with Thomson on the front.

‘But after getting sent this I guess I’m now officially a Spurs far #coys.’

The shirt also included a handwritten note from Tottenham wishing Stokes luck for England’s fourth Ashes Test against Australia, which the all-rounder posted on his Instagram account.

‘To Ben, wishing you the best of luck for the next Ashes Test,’ read the note.

‘Hope you enjoy the shirt! From everyone at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.’

Tottenham striker Harry Kane reacted to Stoke’s post by offering him a warm welcome to the Spurs’ family.

‘Good choice! Good luck for the rest of the Ashes and you’d be more than welcome to a game once the series is finished,’ he tweeted.
