Tourists flee in terror as black smoke smothers Gran Canaria water park

Clouds of black smoke were seen engulfing rides at a popular water park in the Canary Islands this evening.

Firefighters spent hours tackling the inferno which broke out at a warehouse next to Aqualand at about 5.30pm.

One person has been injured and is being treated for burns to one of their legs.

Families were seen running from the park in at Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, covering their faces with towels.

A fire brigade spokesman said a pile-up of rubbish inside the warehouse helped the fire spread quickly, the Mirror reports.

The water park was evacuated as soon as the alarm was raised as tourists were told to leave before toxic fumes swept through the park.

Witnesses say the building where the fire started used to be a venue for celebrating events but has since been turned into a homeless shelter.

Emergency services are still on site and the extent of the damage is not yet known.
