Young driver pummeled elderly man in road-rage attack: police

A Massachusetts man has been arrested for repeatedly punching an elderly driver during a road-rage incident that followed a minor car accident, police said.

Joseph Rivard, 21, of Brockton, was taken into custody Wednesday on charges of assault and battery on a person over the age of 60 and disturbing the peace after the incident on Wednesday in Easton, police announced in a news release Thursday.

The victim, a 71-year-old man from Medford, told responding officers that Rivard punched him several times in the face after their cars made contact while trying to pass each other as they drove westbound on Belmont Street.

The crash caused minor damage, but also sent Rivard into a frenzy, causing him to chase the elderly man into a nearby parking lot, where he allegedly jumped out of his car and started banging on the victim’s vehicle, police said.

“When the victim stepped out of his vehicle, Rivard began punching him in the face several times,” police said. “In order to defend himself, the victim fought back [and] was able to stop Rivard from attacking him.”

The victim, who was not identified by police, was treated for cuts to his face by paramedics at the scene. Rivard, meanwhile, declined treatment for minor swelling beneath his left eye, police said.

Rivard was arraigned Wednesday in Taunton District Court and was released on his own recognizance. He’s due back in court on Feb. 22, CBS Boston reports.
