From the release of lead single \u201cFlowers\u201d in January, to her eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation<\/em> in March, and up to last week\u2019s new single \u201cUsed To Be Young,\u201d Miley Cyrus has had a very successful year. So naturally she\u2019s building on this good fortune by\u2026 not going on tour. My Bitches, for my day job I work in a management office for music artists. I can say with some measure of authority that if an artist wants to make money, they have to go on tour. But okay, I\u2019ll entertain the thought experiment that Miley is too pure a flower child to be driven by more money. Even with that in mind, Miley\u2019s recent commentary on touring has been, well, curious. More on that later. In a new TikTok, Miley is once again waxing on the ills of touring, this time claiming she had to pay for her 2014 Bangerz<\/em> Tour herself because no one believed in her vision. To quote our own Carina, \u201cOkay, Miley.\u201d<\/em> Some coverage from People magazine:<\/p>\n Miley Cyrus admitted just how much she decided to say, \u201cI\u2019ma do my thang,\u201d during her Bangerz<\/em> era.<\/p>\n In the latest installment of the pop star\u2019s Used to Be Young TikTok series in which she reflects on her life and career in the spotlight, the singer, 30, opened up about how she fully funded her Bangerz<\/em> Tour because no one else trusted her vision.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Bangerz<\/em> Tour was an investment in myself,\u201d the \u201cFlowers\u201d artist said of the 2014 tour in support of her hit, fourth studio album. \u201cI didn\u2019t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n She said in the TikTok, \u201cWhen everyone kept saying, \u2018Why are you doing this? You\u2019re going to do like 100 shows and not going to make any money.\u2019 I said, \u2018There\u2019s no one I would rather invest in than myself.\u2019 So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cMidnight Sky\u201d singer explained that few people on her team at the time understood her ideas for the show, which was famously extremely campy. She shared, \u201cA lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces, so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue.\u201d<\/p>\n Cyrus also opened up about the significance behind one of the concepts of the concert that she and her creative director at the time, Diane Martel, came up with. \u201c[Martel] goes, \u2018How would you want to end this concert?\u2019 Like, \u2018The show is so big, how do you want to end it?\u2019 and I wanted to end it in a Truman Show<\/em> reference,\u201d the performer shared, referring to the 1998 movie starring Jim Carrey as a man whose life is broadcast as a TV show without him knowing.<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cSo I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign, the way Jim Carrey does, because I felt like The Truman Show<\/em> was really a reflection of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n [From People]<\/p>\n I refuse to believe that there was no one<\/em> who would fund what Miley put up onstage in that tour. What, because it was too crass? Wasn\u2019t her brand of \u201cgoofy vulgarity\u201d the point of the Bangerz<\/em> era? I think Miley might not realize that that concert was more exhausting than shocking. It\u2019s just not adding up for me.<\/p>\n This angle though, of \u201cI had to pay for it all myself to get what I wanted,\u201d<\/em> is a bit of a departure from her other recent comments on touring. Last week she made the case that performing in front of an audience \u201cerases her humanity and connection,\u201d and I had questions. I would think that having a live audience would reinforce the human connection, no? Maybe she would prefer playing small arenas. It\u2019s also totally fine if she just doesn\u2019t like performing! I don\u2019t think I\u2019d fully believe that of Miley specifically, I\u2019d probably give side-eye like when she said she\u2019s not \u201cattention-seeking.\u201d But I do think I\u2019d respect her more if she simply said \u201cI\u2019ve made the personal decision not to tour right now, and I\u2019m grateful to be in the position to make that choice,\u201d<\/em> and end it there. Without involving the depths of humanity. It\u2019s just kinda hard to reconcile that heady subject with the image of Miley coming out of her own face onstage via giant tongue slide.
