Spiders frighten a lot of people.

Whether they're big or small – they always manage to be unwanted in people's homes.

Even if you're not afraid of them, the thought of one crawling all over you at night is enough to put you off.

And this month – you may want to be more cautious than ever – as giant spiders are starting to appear once more as the confusing wet weather followed by a heatwave has forced them inside.

If you've noticed a few more hanging around lately – now you know why – and it can be quite unnerving when you see them creeping around.

But you don't need to worry too much, as there are fuss-free things you can do to keep them out of your homes.

This will cost you little, if nothing at all, if you have some on your spice rack.

Spiders can't stand the smell of cinnamon, so it's worth using to deter them.

If you haven't got the ground version to hand, you could even pop some dried sticks or put a scented candle on to burn that smells like the warming spice.

Even though it's not as pungent as cinnamon, it can help to keep the eight-legged creatures away.

If you mix a solution together that comprises of half white vinegar and half water you'll be able to use it to put them off coming in.

Pop it into a spray bottle and then spray it in corners, cracks and holes.

Just be careful where you spray the solution, as it can cause damage to varnished services.

Another ingredient you may have to hand is citrus, and spiders are thought to detest all citrus scents.

Try rubbing some orange or lemon peel along areas such as skirting boards, window sills and shelves.

Again, you could also opt for scented candle or use lemon-scented cleaning products.

The pungent product isn't just good for keeping vampires away, as spiders also hate it.

If you don't mind a strong whiff of garlic then try popping some whole or crushed cloves into a spray bottle.

Top it up with some water and use it to spray in the areas where you think the pesky bugs come in.

Back last year a woman, known only as Sylvia, shared her rather simple hack in a post on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK.

She said she discovered that spiders hate the smell of mint and just a whiff of it can send them scurrying off in the other direction.

She took some mint and put it inside a bottle of anti-bacterial spray – then sprayed the stuff all around her house to deter the bugs.

Her post read: "Had leftover packet of mint and small amount of cleaner left. Chopped mint and added to anti bac cleaner and filled with water.

"Sprayed under window sill outside and around the door. I watched the spiders run as I sprayed.

"They hate mint right enough. Some people use essential oils but I just thought I would use up what I had."

Not only did she rave about the amazing results, but it was even cheaper than half a pint of beer.

Want all the biggest Lifestyle news straight to your inbox?
