An office worker who was sick of wearing a suit and tie in the sweltering weather has deemed his workplace ‘sexist’ after being banned from wearing shorts.

The fed-up employee took to Reddit to voice his frustrations, arguing that he should be able to wear shorts in hot weather if his female co-workers can wear dresses or skirts.

In the post, titled ‘Sexist dress codes leaving men to dry in hot weather,’ user mpchooligan lashed out against office-appropriate attire.

Beginning his rant, he said: ‘I hate this policy in my office. Its ok for women to wear a skirt or a dress, but men aren’t allowed to wear shorts. Even in this hot weather we’re having.’

An office worker, sick of wearing smart wear in sweltering weather, has hit out at his workplace for being ‘sexist’

He added: ‘We aren’t even client facing and these days you can definitely buy shorts that look smart-casual enough to wear to the office.’

The disgruntled worker explained that the skirts which his female co-workers wear ‘don’t scream professional’ in a traditional sense, so he and the rest of the male workforce should be able to get their legs out.

He asked: ‘Is it that the male dominated management want to see some ‘leg’ in the office?

‘Is there any wonder people don’t want to return to the office and want to continue WFH.’

And the worker wasn’t alone in his frustration and thousands of Reddit users took to the comments to air their own frustration.

One person wrote: ‘A dress code in a non-public facing office is just plain stupid. It’s also an unnecessary employee expense. Not to mention uncomfortable.’

The fed-up employee argued that he should be able to wear shorts on a hot day if his female co-workers can wear skirts are dresses, and thousands of Reddit users agreed

Another office worker, who felt the no-shorts rule was unfair, told a story of when their workforce protested against the rule.

They wrote: ‘The entire staff protested by coming to work in shorts, calling the bluff — they had to decide whether to double down and send everyone home, effectively closing the doors, or accept everyone wearing shorts.

‘They ended up caving and allowing shorts.’

Some chimed in with their own opinions of unfair workplace rules.

Many Reddit users argued that they should be able to sit down at their workplace.

One person wrote: ‘I work at a high class hotel, and I’m allowed to sit on a chair at my desk. But the day shift? They have to stand.’

The infuriated employee added: ‘I can promise you, nobody who has ever stayed at any hotel, anywhere, has given the smallest of f**** if the clerk is sitting down or not.’

This is not the first time an employee has hit out at their employers against office dress codes.

Back in 2017, one worker, Joey Barge from Buckinghamshire, took it a step further and turned up to work in a dress to protest company rules.

After he was sent home for wearing a pair of smart blue shorts, Joey donned a bright pink and black dress to the call centre.

Though he predicted he would be sent home again, his act of defiance sparked a change in the rules – with bosses declaring over email that ‘gentlemen in the office’ can wear three-quarter length shorts in ‘black, navy, or beige only’.
