Tuesday<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Massive 70ft tall models of Kim Jong Un&#8217;s father and grandfather towered over the North Korean dictator during an official assembly this week.<\/p>\n<p>The models of the country&#8217;s founder\u00a0Kim Il Sung and successor Kim Jong Il were behind him for the Supreme People&#8217;s Assembly in Pyongyang on Tuesday, during which he demanded an &#8216;exponential boost&#8217; in nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>His grandfather\u00a0Kim Il Sung ruled the isolationist sate with an iron fist from 1948 to 1994, with his son\u00a0Kim Jong Il assuming power upon his father&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>With the example set by his father, he carried forward the family tradition of brutally oppressing the country&#8217;s people with violence, executions and purges.<\/p>\n<p>Jong Il himself died in 2011 of a suspected heart attack, and was succeeded by his youngest son Kim Jong Un, who was hailed by state media as the &#8216;great which he demanded an &#8216;exponential boost&#8217; in nuclear weapons<\/p>\n<p>In a not-so-subtle homage to his ancestors, Kim appeared at the People&#8217;s Assembly on Thursday sitting behind a vast wooden desk, with the two 70-foot models looming large behind him on a stage, smiling over the crowd of party members.<\/p>\n<p>The slightly taller model of Kim Il Sung showed North Korea&#8217;s founder &#8211; known as the &#8216;Great Leader&#8217; in North Korea, dressed in his signature three-piece suit.<\/p>\n<p>To the right stood the model of the country&#8217;s former &#8216;Dear Leader&#8217; Kim Jong Il in his typical khaki military attire that he became known for wearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The model is seen holding a stack of documents in its left hand.<\/p>\n<p>Like his father, Kim Jong Un has carried on his family&#8217;s tradition of brutality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His populace are widely reported to be starving, and with little healthcare service to speak of, diseases like Covid-19 run rife.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, anyone showing signs of dissent against the ruling regime, or of consuming media from the West or South Korea, face harsh punishments including prison, forced labour and even summary executions.<\/p>\n<p>During the assembly,\u00a0Jong Un<span>\u00a0demanded an &#8216;exponential&#8217; boost in the production of modern atomic weapons as the dictator declared <\/span>North Korea<span> a <\/span>nuclear power<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The despot also called for his country to play a larger role in a coalition of nations confronting the United States constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme People&#8217;s Assembly&#8217;s session on Tuesday and Wednesday came after Kim traveled to Russia&#8217;s Far East this month to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and visit military and technology sites.<\/p>\n<p>The trip sparked Western concerns about a possible arms alliance in which North Korea would supply Putin with badly needed munitions to fuel his war on Ukraine in exchange for economic aid and advanced Russian technologies to enhance North Korea&#8217;s nuclear and missile systems.<\/p>\n<p>As North Korea slowly ends its pandemic lockdown, Kim has been actively boosting his partnerships with Moscow and Beijing as he attempts to break out of diplomatic isolation and join a united front against Washington.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The assembly also came as an\u00a0American soldier released by North Korea returned to the US and underwent health screenings in Texas, the Pentagon said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Travis King &#8211; described as being in &#8216;good health&#8217; &#8211; is at the Brooke Army Medical Center, a usual stop for recently freed detainees, including basketball star Brittney Griner and &#8216;Hotel Rwanda&#8217; hero Paul Rusesabagina.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" &#8216;exponential&#8217; boost in the production of modern atomic weapons as the dictator declared North Korea a nuclear power<\/p>\n<p>King will go through a &#8216;reintegration program&#8217; involving medical screenings and mental health assessments after arriving back in the United States overnight, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told journalists.<\/p>\n<p>He will also &#8216;be getting debriefed by US military officials,&#8217; she said, without providing details on that process.<\/p>\n<p>After a drunken bar fight and a stay in South Korean jail, Private Second Class King was meant to fly back to Texas in July.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of travelling to Fort Bliss for disciplinary hearings, he walked out of the Seoul-area airport, joined a Demilitarized Zone
