While many couples only tie the knot once, a growing trend among celebrities in recent years has been to hold second weddings to renew their vows – but one couple who opted for a second wedding long before it became fashionable are Victoria and David Beckham.

The couple initially tied the knot all the way back in 1999 in a lavish ceremony that featured a very regal theme complete with crowns, thrones and multiple outfit changes – something that seemed particularly apt for football’s golden boy and his pop superstar bride.

However, when renewing their vows seven years later, the former England captain and his fashion designer wife opted for a far more lowkey ceremony in an intimate and private venue attended only by their nearest and dearest.

But what exactly was the wedding like and where did it take place?

At the time of the wedding in 2006, David and Victoria were primarily living in Madrid, where David was based at the time for his sporting career, but flew home to the UK for a special surprise ceremony that had been kept entirely secret from Victoria!

Keen to renew his vows, David had organised a secret celebration at the couple’s £11.5 million Hertfordshire family home, with three of the couple’s four children in attendance (as Harper wouldn’t be born until 2011).

With a tiny guest list of just six people, David and Victoria were joined by sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz as they reaffirmed their commitment to each other in a sweet but private way.

Recalling the experience on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, David told listeners: "We have renewed our vows since [our first wedding] and it was a lot more private, there were about six people there in our house.”

Although very little is known about the intricacies of the ceremony or what they both wore for the occasion, the Daily Mirror did report that David had picked out a white dress for his bride ahead of their second trip down the aisle.

A friend then informed the publication of just how much work had gone into organised the secret ceremony as they said: "David was meticulously planning the big day for months. It was a huge undertaking to keep it all under wraps.

"He was desperately excited but had had to keep quiet with everyone but his and Victoria's closest family."

They then continued: "Only a handful of people were at the ceremony and they've managed to keep it under wraps for nearly two years. It was an incredibly beautiful day and everyone lucky enough to be present was in tears when they repeated their vows. It was simple, beautiful and very non-showbiz. It was about them as a couple and a family unit – not glitz and glamour."

Despite the secrecy, David did however reveal that he was far more impressed with the second outfits than he had been the extravagance of their first wedding, as he recalled his outfit during the same Desert Island Discs interview.

"Victoria's was pretty nice. Mine, I'm like, 'What was I thinking?’” David told listeners.

"I even had a top hat in purple.”

In honour of their vow renewal, the couple also decided to mark the occasion with matching tattoos, in a permanent reminder of their commitment to their marriage.

The loved up pair were tattooed with roman numerals to mark the date 8 May 2006 alongside the Latin words “De Integro”, which means “Again from the start.”

As well as having planned a secret wedding ceremony, David also pulled out all the stops with a second honeymoon for the love of his life, as he whisked Victoria off to Paris for a few days.

While staying in the French capital, David treated her to a shopping spree at Azzedine Alaia and Colette, two of her favourite stores – and even took her for a delicious meal at Michelin three starred restaurant Guy Savoy.

It was an experience Victoria recalled fondly, as she told US talkshow Today: "We were doing school on Monday and David said we had to go somewhere for the afternoon."

"We land in London, get off the plane and were met by the same car that drove us on our wedding day. We got remarried with the priest that married us all those years ago! think how can this get any better? We get on the plane and we fly to Paris, where we had a 24-hour honeymoon and we stayed in Suite 302."
