A DOG trainer has revealed the best guard dog breed for first time owners.

Will Atherton, from the UK, took to social media to share what he thinks is the perfect big breed for those who have never owned a pooch before.

"What is the best guard dog breed for new owners?" The expert dog trainer began.

While snuggling with his pet Labrador, Will revealed this wasn't the dog for you if you want it to have a sense of protection.

"Although I love the Labrador, it's no secret that these gentle giants might not make the best guarding breed, even if they are perfect for new owners," he added.

Instead, the dog expert recommended a much larger dog to bring home.

He explained proper guard dog breeds should be left to experienced dog owners who know how to train them and read behaviour cues.

He continued: "In reality, if you think you need a guard dog, what you need is for a burglar to not break into your house in the first place.

"To achieve that you don't need guarding skills, you need intimidation factor.

"A dog that will bark if somebody is coming around your house that shouldn't be, a deep, thunderous bark."

If you want the traits of a Labrador but the intimidation of a large dog like a Mastiff, Will recommends the Newfoundland.

"I think it's a wonderful choice for first time owners looking for guarding skills," he added.

It's important to note that all dogs should be properly trained.

The clip posted to the dog expert's TikTok account @iamwillatherton has since gone viral with over 120k views and 8,000 likes.

Fellow dog lovers were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section.

One person wrote: "Grew up with a Newf. Best dog that ever was."

Another commented: "Always had Newfoundlands and they are imo the best big dog for beginners and families with kids."

"While I love Newfies…the ones I met would lead a burglar right to the goods for any type of treat," penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: "I have a Newfie/lab mix. He's perfect. Big scary bark while hiding under the table just in case."

Someone else added: "Newfies are lovely! I also think Lab/put mix is an excellent guard dog. Extremely loyal. Territorial but sweet."

Fabulous will pay for your exclusive stories.
