They might be riding high in the polls, but according to interior designer and taste arbiter Nicky Haslam, the Waleses are dull, dull, dull.

And that’s he says, because they like to wear a lot of blue – and compound it by coordinating their outfits with those of their children.

For those not in the know, Haslam is an Old Etonian interior designer and waspish commentator who this year has included William, Kate and family on his annual Common List, a playful compilation of things that have distressed him over the past year.

As Richard Eden reports in today’s Daily Mail, the list is printed on a tea towel – or drying up cloth, as Haslam calls it – and sold to friends at £40 a time.

‘You see endless pictures of the whole family in various shades of Blue,’ he tells Eden. ‘It’s common…Wouldn’t little Princess Charlotte like to wear white?’

As for the coordination, he dismisses that as ‘childish’, a remark which is all the more cutting as Haslam has worked for Charles and is a friend of Queen Camilla!

But its unlikely the Waleses will care too much.

The intended message of the colour coordination has always been clear: they are a united family unit performing their role as best they can.

And whether Haslam likes blue or not, right now the family’s in the pink…
