A mother’s dream £5,000 Caribbean cruise was ruined when she claims a flight attendant poured ‘boiling hot coffee’ onto her lap – burning between her legs so badly she couldn’t sit down for the nine-hour flight.

Tracy Rawlins, 55, and her husband Matty Rawlins, 54, had spent an ‘amazing’ week celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary on a cruise before she says she was burned on her return flight from Barbados to Birmingham on February 26 this year.

The mother, from Water Orton, Warwickshire, says a flight attendant ‘wobbled’ and accidentally poured the scalding liquid onto her lap, burning her thighs through a thin dress.

Tracy claims the incident happened during the early in the flight during the first round of service, leaving her in such ‘agony’ she was unable to sit down for the rest of the nine-hour flight.

The mother of two claims the ‘horrific’ incident could have been avoided if she had been given the usual tray to hold all food and beverages – instead of the cabin crew member pouring directly into a plastic cup that Tracy was holding.

Tracy says cabin crew members applied burn gel to the wounds and informed her the accident would be logged in an accident book, which she would be sent on email

However, Tracy says the flight had run out of vegetarian meals and she was left without food or a tray – despite having the same issue on the outward journey, where she claims she was given chocolate fingers instead of a meal.

The education worker says the incident produced ‘unbearably painful’ blisters and left her with scarring that made her feel self-conscious over the summer.

Tracy said: ‘It ruined what was an amazing holiday. We were snorkelling, had lots of days out on different beaches, and went to little islands.

‘It was beautiful and a great holiday, but spoiled by the flight home.

‘There were quite a few mishaps along the way.

‘There were no vegetarian meals so I said I would just have coffee.

‘Because I didn’t have a tray with food on, she just gave me a plastic cup to hold in my hand.

‘She poured the coffee and wobbled a bit but she just continued to pour it straight into my lap.

‘It was absolutely horrific. I couldn’t get up and I was just screaming.

‘I was strapped into my chair because of the turbulence and it was just scalding me.

‘It just kept on going. The more I was screaming the more that she was shocked and it just kept coming out.

‘It was a surreal moment, I thought it was never going to stop.

‘I was in absolute agony for the rest of the flight. It was horrendous.

‘I stood up for the rest of the flight. I couldn’t sit down, my legs couldn’t even be put together, it was the most painful thing ever.

‘The pain got worse. I was starting to blister straight away.

‘It was scalding water and she had just boiled it because we were next to the kitchen area.’

‘We feel totally ignored. It’s absolutely disgusting. We’ve always had quite expensive holiday packages, but we’re certainly not valued customers.’ said Tracy (pictured with husband Matty)

Tracy says cabin crew members applied burn gel to the wounds and informed her the accident would be logged in an accident book, which she would be sent on email.

She claims staff had promised Tracy and Matty would be sent an email logging the accident – but the pair say this was never received, prompting her to make a complaint.

Tracy said: ‘We feel totally ignored. It’s absolutely disgusting. We’ve always had quite expensive holiday packages, but we’re certainly not valued customers.

‘It’s left a massive bitter taste in my mouth with the way we’ve been ignored.

‘It could have been a little two-year-old child sitting there.

‘They didn’t mean to do it obviously, we were just so ignored when it did happen.

‘It could have been avoided. She could have gone to get a tray to put the cup on.

‘Something needs to be put in place so that can never happen to anybody else.’

Tracy says she received medical treatment for her burns a few days after the incident, where she was prescribed a specialist cream by her GP.

Tracy said: ‘My blisters took a few weeks to heal.

‘My legs are quite chunky anyway so with the chafing and everything else it was unbearable.

‘I have scars and discolouration which impacted me over summer because you want to sunbathe, maybe go on holiday again and wear short skirts or shorts.

‘I won’t do that now. It’s put me off and it’s absolutely made me feel more self-conscious.’

Tracy and Matty say they have sought legal advice and have appointed a solicitor in relation to the incident.
