<\/p>\nRISHI Sunak is on a collision course with carping left-wingers threatening to sink his landmark trans guidance for schools.<\/p>\n
The long-awaited rules stressed that teachers should only let kids behave as the opposite gender in \u201cextremely rare\u201d cases in consultation with their parents.<\/p>\n

Granting a child\u2019s request to socially transition – changing their pronouns, name and uniform – must tick several boxes including ensuring they have not been peer pressured.<\/p>\n
The impact on fellow pupils must also be considered, and primary school kids questioning their gender \u201cshould be treated with greater caution\u201d because they are \u201cmore vulnerable\u201d.<\/p>\n
Any bid to wear the uniform of the opposite sex also draws the line at swimming costumes.<\/p>\n
Ministers hailed the long-awaited trans guidance as a \u201csea change\u201d approach that protects school staff navigating \u201can issue that has been hijacked by activists\u201d.<\/p>\n
But it was quickly savaged by a chorus of Labour MPs, union chiefs and campaigners.<\/p>\n
The controversial charity Stonewall declared the document \u201cactively dangerous\u201d that would have a \u201cchilling effect\u201d comparable with the historic ban on promoting homosexuality.<\/p>\n Branding it \u201clegally unworkable\u201d, a spokesman added: \u201cIf implemented it would inevitably lead to real harm being caused to trans children and young people across England.\u201d<\/p>\n Labour MP Kate Osborne said the guidance was \u201ccruel and unworkable\u201d and suggested teachers should ignore it.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cA refusal to respect children\u2019s wishes or worse, to out them to parents risks causing real harm\u2026 I hope schools put their students\u2019 needs ahead of this Government\u2019s hate.\u201d<\/p>\n National Education Union boss Daniel Kebede also said that schools \u201cdo not need to change their current policies at this stage\u201d while a 12-week consultation happens.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n It directly contradicts Downing Street\u2019s edict that heads should start obeying the guidance right away.<\/p>\n Education Secretary Gillian Keegan insisted the guidance removes \u201cany confusion about the protections that must be in place for biological sex and single-sex spaces\u201d.<\/p>\n Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch added: \u201cIt makes clear that schools do not have to accept a child\u2019s request to socially transition, and that teachers or pupils should not be pressured into using different pronouns.\u201d<\/p>\n The Department for Education said \u201cproper use of this guidance means social transition, in practice, should be extremely rare\u201d.<\/p>\n If a child does transition there is no requirement for teachers or fellow pupils to use their new pronouns.<\/p>\n On uniform, the guidance says a child who is questioning their gender should generally \u201cbe held to the same uniform standards as other children of their sex\u201d.<\/p>\n But on certain occasions \u201cschools may agree changes or exceptions to the standard school uniform for most uniform items, but not for swimwear\u201d.<\/p>\n Gender-questioning pupils should not compete in sport with the opposite sex where it \u201crisks safety or fairness\u201d.<\/p>\n Single-sex spaces like toilets and changing rooms based on biology must be offered by schools.<\/p>\n Ministers also faced anger from Tory MPs led by Liz Truss complaining the guidance \u201cdoes not go far enough\u201d.<\/p>\n The former PM said: \u201cI fear that activists and others will be able to exploit loopholes in the guidance and the existing legal framework to pursue their agenda, leaving children at risk of making irreversible changes and with single-sex spaces not sufficiently protected.\u201d<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/primary-school-students-sitting-classroom-840619744.jpg\")
