Harry Styles’s new buzzcut has put fans into a frenzy – and it’s not the first time a celebrity’s dramatic hair change has been met with divided opinions.
The former One Direction singer looked completely unrecognisable after shaving off his famous locks while attending U2’s show at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend.
And, after images emerged of the 29-year-old star’s buzzcut on TMZ, social media users raced to X (formerly known as Twitter) to react to his new haircut, which many described as ‘unhinged.’
Some, even, compared the move to when Britney Spears infamously shaved her head in front of paparazzi in 2007.
‘To everyone posting the pic Harry Styles with his shaved head, please stop it’s hurting me emotionally, mentally and physically,’ one wrote.
Another joked: ‘Now he’s just styles.’
Other marveled that they never thought they would ‘see the headline ‘Harry Styles has shaved his head.”
So, to buzzcut or not to buzzcut? Hollywood heartthrobs have long divided their fans with their shaved heads.
Here, FEMAIL looks at times it’s worked out for the better… and times when it hasn’t quite had the desired effect…
BETTER
Jake Gyllenhaal
While it can be risky for Hollywood heartthrobs to don a buzzcut, sometimes the risk pays off. And a prime example of this is bald Jake Gyllenhaal – who sent the internet wild when he shaved his head in 2012 to play a cop in movie End of Watch
While it can be risky for Hollywood heartthrobs to don a buzzcut, sometimes the risk pays off.
And a prime example of this is bald Jake Gyllenhaal – who sent the internet wild when he shaved his head in 2012 to play a cop in movie End of Watch.
The documentary-style film, featuring Anna Kendrick and America Ferrera, centres around a friendship between two cops – Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña.
And bald Gyllenhaal sent fans spinning, so much so that people on social media still thirst of him today 10 years later.
‘Bald Jake Gyllenhaal is hot and I will not be silenced,’ one person wrote on social media in 2019 – sharing a video of him.
While in 2021, another person said: ‘I want to touch Jake Gyllenhaal’s bald head like it’s the holiest thing on the planet.’
Jason Statham
Jason Statham is so known for his hairless head that fans were unsure of how to react when he played a character with hair in 2005
A true OG of the bald celebs, Jason Statham embraces his lack of hair.
In fact, Statham is so known for his hairless head that fans were unsure how to react when he played a character with hair in 2005.
In the film, Statham plays Jake Green – a gangster and gambler who tricks people using a victory-ensuring formula.
People online were so alarmed by Statham with hair that one wrote ‘Few things in life are as disconcerting as Jason Statham with hair’, while another asked if there was ‘anything scarier’.
The actor’s dating life was also not impacted by the lack of hair on his head, as he married former-Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in 2010.
The pair have been happily married ever since and share two children – a six-year-old son and one-year-old daughter.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
Swayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson revealed that for him being bald was a conscious choice, rather than a matter of genetic predisposition
Dwayne ‘the rock’ Johnson is another bald celebrity whose lack of hair has had no impact on his popularity – even being named 2016’s sexiest man alive.
But the wrestler-turned-actor revealed that for him being bald was a conscious choice, rather than a matter of genetic predisposition.
Based off a timelines of The Rock’s hair-dos, it looks like he made this decision at the start of the 2010s.
Confirming that he the choice in 2017, The Rock replied to a GIF of him with curly brown hair on X, formerly known as Twitter.
‘Why I luv GIFs,’ he wrote. ‘I’m not bald because I went bald.’
He went on to explain his hair is quite difficult to manage – comparing it to the pubic hair of a llama…
Bruce Willis

Very few people can say their head has been described as ‘a monument to cranial architecture’.
But while some turn to hair transplants when they start to notice thinning, Bruce Willis’s balding was revered – both by himself and others.
And his bald confidence should be used as motivation for all of those whose hairlessness has made them question their appearance.
Fans first saw Willis’s hair start to thin when he graced our screens in the TV series Moonlighting where he played detective David Addison.
He was just 30 years old at the time, but went on to commit to the look.
On the set of Die Hard 4.0, Willis famously said: ‘I’m a man and I will kick anybody’s a*** who tries to tell me that I’m not one because my hair’s thinning.’
WORSE
ZAYN MALIK
So popular were his tresses, that at one point a lone lock of Zayn’s hair, brushing over his forehead, had its own moment on X – formerly known as Twitter. Zayn pictured left in 2014 and right in 2017
When he was in One Direction, the singer was known for his styled, Johnny Depp-esque hair.

In 2015, the singer, 30, unveiled his new buzz cut as he attended the Asian Awards at London’s Grosvenor hotel with his mother Trisha.
The ex-boyband-member had shorn off his long locks, ditching a top knot in favour of an extreme shaved head.
Later, he took it one step further and dyed his head a vivid bright green. Fans were still supportive of the move, but grieved the former Directioner’s luscious locks.

In 2017, he took it a step further.
In a photo posted to his mother Trisha Malik’s Instagram page, the singer appeared completely bald.
Posing in between his mother and then-girlfriend Gigi Hadid, Zayn proudly showed off his bare head, while still sporting his trademark scruffy beard.
Trisha offered no explanation as to what prompted her son’s drastic new look, simply captioning the photo with a series of love heart emojis.
Meanwhile, Gigi was seen beaming at the camera beside him, while his mother planted a sweet kiss on the side of her son’s newly bald head.
His shaved head appears to have been an extremely recent development, as just two days earlier, Zayn was sporting a full head of hair in yet another photo posted on Trisha’s Instagram.
Speaking to ELLE UK in 2016, Zayn confessed he’s enjoyed being able to experiment with his personal every since quitting One Direction back in March 2015.
The boy band was renowned for being notoriously controlling of the public images of Zayn and his fellow bandmates.
‘Since leaving One Direction I’ve been given the freedom to be able to wear whatever I want and that’s made it more interesting. More creative,’ he told the publication.
‘I can say I want to wear metal arms and it’ll happen.’
JAMES MCAVOY
James McAvoy is known for sporting a bald head as Professor X in X-Men – but the Scottish actor, 44, has himself admitted he’s not a fan of the look.
In 2017, he told People: ‘I used to like the fact that it afforded me a certain amount of anonymity but it no longer does that.
‘Since I did two movies that everybody saw where I had a bald head, now it’s like a f****** beacon.
‘I do like the fact that I don’t have to do anything in the morning.’

His normal off-duty look features a stylishly coiffed head of light brown hair.
James first appeared as the psychic mutant in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, taking on the famous role from Patrick Stewart.
The origins franchise follows the stories of Charles Xavier and Max Eisenhardt before they become arch rivals Professor X and Magneto.
James had a full head of hair for the first two films, but his character went bald in 2016 flick Apocalypse when antagonist En Sabah Nur hijacked his psychic abilities to find mutants.
When he first shaved his head for the role in 2016, he revealed his son, Brendan, seven, likes the extreme haircut.
The star kept up the look to play a man with 23 different personalities in 2016 film Split and its sequel, Glass
He told the Radio Times: ‘My kid likes it when he sits on my shoulders and rubs my head. He goes, “Ooh, it’s all prickly.”‘
This was not the first time the X-Men star had shaved off his brown locks for a film role.
He planned to star in the 2011 flick 50/50, which told the story of a man with cancer, but the actor had to pull out days into filming due to a family emergency.

Matt Damon, 53, has through the years been known for his charmingly messy blond locks.
But the actor has at time experimented with the buzzed cut look, most memorably for roles in Elysium (2013) and EuroTrip (2004).

EuroTrip sees him sport a bleached buzzcut to play band frontman Donny – who performs the movie’s famous hit ‘Scotty Doesn’t Know’.
However, it would appear the star is more of a fan of his grown out hair, more often sporting a neat trimmed style.
TOM HARDY
Tom Hardy is known for being one of Britain’s most handsome – and talented – actors. Pictured left in 2018 and right in 2021
Tom Hardy is known for being one of Britain’s most handsome – and talented – actors.
But the star, 46, has in past divided opinion when opting for shorter tresses.
In 2015, he unveiled a drastic buzz-cut at the UK premiere of his film Child 44 – teamed with a manicured beard.
And as he attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in Windsor in 2018, he left fans divided over his completely bald look.
As he arrived at St George’s Chapel with his wife Charlotte Riley, the actor showed off his shaved head, a necessity for his latest role as the notorious Al Capone in new film Fonzo.
Fans went into a frenzy after spotting the star with his bald head, taking to X to voice their shock at the shocking transformation.
One startled fan wrote: ‘Tom Hardy has just arrived at the royal wedding and he’s BALD. I have never felt so disrespected’.
‘Forget the #RoyalWedding…I’m more concerned about WHERE TOM HARDY’S HAIR HAS GONE?!?!’
A third fan commented: ‘I’ll love Tom Hardy like forever and understand it’s for a role but was thoroghly disappointed to see him bald. Imagine if he had the ol’ facial hair and actual hair going, would’ve made a fool out of David Beckham’.
In later years, Tom has also styled his locks to be fuller on top and bald at the sides.
However it would seem the actor is best revered for his heart-throb status with a neat, slicked back look, or his Mad Max-era inspired styled spikes.
