West Ham vs Manchester City betting preview

City fans probably expected to be unbeaten at this stage of the Premier League season ā€“ thatā€™s become their default position.

But West Ham supporters will be in dreamland at having not lost yet ā€“ 10 points from 12 is a fine haul for the Europa Conference League winners given some tricky fixtures so far.

Now comes the big test though, against the champions.

Still, there is hope.

City didnā€™t have a great record on the road against the better teams in 2022/23 (see below), while after a relatively calm start to the campaign, their players are now very much back on the treadmill with international duty preceding this game and the Champions League and Carabao Cup competitions about to begin, meaning the weekend-midweek grind is very much back for the Treble winners.

Those factors will doubtless effect Pep Guardiolaā€™s team selection and while David Moyes also has Europa League matches to now think about, itā€™s probably not a competition heā€™s too worried about just yet.

West Ham also didnā€™t have the greatest record against the elite last term but runners-up Arsenal, third-placed Man Utd, Villa and Spurs all failed to win at the London Stadium and this looks a decent opportunity for the hosts given they have little to lose.

šŸ“ West Ham vs Manchester City key stats

  • Both sides are unbeaten so far in the Premier League with City the only side still with a 100% record.
  • For Man City, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic are all injury doubts, while Kevin de Bruyne is a long-term absentee.
  • West Ham may be without right-back Vladimir Coufal but midfielder Tomas Soucek is fit again.
  • Pep Guardiolaā€™s men won just two of their nine matches away to their fellow top-half sides last season. West Ham currently sit fourth.
  • Jack Grealish was the second-most fouled player in the Premier League last season, behind the now-departed Wilfried Zaha.

West Ham vs Manchester City best bets

No player carded

A long shot, yes, but should it really be 18/1? The answer has to be no.

These two sides were the best behaved in last seasonā€™s Premier League and just one card was shown in each of their 2022/23 meetings.

Admittedly, ref Andy Madleyā€™s numbers so far this season arenā€™t great for the bet but last season he was a below-average carder and long term heā€™s a fairly lenient official.

West Ham (+1.25) on the Asian handicap

For those unfamiliar with the Asian handicap, weā€™re backing West Ham to avoid defeat here and even if they lose by a single goal, there will be just a tiny loss.

Despite a tough opening set of fixtures, David Moyesā€™ side have won three and drawn one so far and this will be only their second home game ā€“ Chelsea have already been beaten 3-1 at the London Stadium.

City won only two of nine away to their fellow top-half sides last season and Pep Guardiola now has to juggle the rigours of the international break and the pending Champions League (City play on Tuesday).

In short, the Hammers can get something here.

āš½ Back West Ham (+1.25) on the Asian handicap at 5/6 at bet365 āš½

Phil Foden anytime assist

Foden has made a strong start to the season and has featured more centrally due to Kevin de Bruyneā€™s injury.

De Bruyne has long been the assists king of the Premier League but City assists will still come, just from a different source, and itā€™s probably only a matter of time before Fodenā€™s price collapses in this market.

He has landed this bet three times out of four so far this season and 16/5 about him repeating the trick looks too big.

āš½ Bet on Foden to assist at 16/5 at William Hill āš½
