Sir David Jason will be back on the box with a surprise Only Fools and Horses Christmas special.
The show ended 20 years ago but is still synonymous with TV Christmas schedules. But fans can rejoice with some pukka news that Sir David is bringing the gang back to TV.
Grab yourself a cheese and pineapple stick and settle down for some good telly nostalgia as Sir David will be presenting a new documentary about the classic sitcom, in which he’ll reveal which festive episode he believes is the cherry on top of the pina colada. And in the special he’ll be joined by a line-up of regulars from the Nags Head boozer. This includes his on-screen other half Tessa Peake-Jones, who played Raquel, as they pay homage to the show and the great comedy writing and actors who made it such a success.
A TV source told The Sun: “It wouldn’t be Christmas without the Trotters, so this is a great way for viewers to get their Only Fools fix. Producers were delighted when David was passed fit to appear following his surgery, so the special will be cushty for fans.”
In the upcoming documentary, to be shown on Channel 5, Sir David will recall the iconic moments from the beloved sitcom, which first aired in 1981, and regale viewers with some secrets of behind the scenes.
He will be joined in the special with a smattering of celebrity fans including Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis plus Strictly contender and newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Only Fools And Horses came off air in 2003, but 40 years after it started it is still part of Christmas TV culture because of the record-breaking audience figures it commanded..
As its most famous character – cheeky chappie market stall trader Del Boy, Sir David is very much a part of keeping its memory alive by regularly attending Only Fools And Horses conventions, to the delight of fans.
Sadly his hip surgery this year forced organisers to postpone the latest get-together. However, fully recovered, Sir David is expected to attend the rescheduled event early next year.
Lauding his new “bionic hip” last month, David said: “I am fine. I’m having a little trouble getting the muscles back because I was so infirm for two to three weeks.
“I wasn’t using the legs at all. That’s where I am at now, getting it back, doing some exercises. But the hip itself is wonderful.”
