Strictly star Adam Thomas’s wife Caroline has revealed she feared for his mental health and it was “touch and go” whether he would be able to compete in the dance show.
The Waterloo Road actor shocked fans earlier this year when he revealed he had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 35.
It’s a painful condition in which the immune system causes the body to attack itself, leading to swollen and stiff joints.

Caroline wed Adam six years ago and the couple are parents to son Teddy, nine, and daughter Elsie, five.
She says: “We’re really excited because at one point it was touch and go if he could do the show. It’s been a really tough year. Adam couldn’t get out of bed in January – he was on crutches. It’s been horrific.
"I didn’t know what to do for the best and that’s when we sought help. He tried with so many doctors. I snapped and said, ‘I can’t see you like this anymore’. Even getting downstairs was difficult. It really affected his mental health not being able to play football with Teddy – it broke his heart. But him speaking up about arthritis has helped other people.”
Last Saturday Adam, who shot to fame on Emmerdale and was a finalist in I’m A Celebrity, performed a Super Mario Brothers-themed jive with pro partner Luba Mushtuk, scoring 26 points.
And as Caroline runs her own ABCD School of Dance and Drama in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, trolls were already having a pop before her husband even hit the dance floor.
They suggested his wife had been giving him a helping hand behind the scenes but Caroline vows that isn’t the case.
She laughs: “I have not taught Adam – he would be my worst student and wouldn’t listen.”
Following the reboot of Waterloo Road, Teddy joined the show playing Adam’s on-screen son.
Caroline, 32, says: “Adam buzzes off it. It’s so special for the two of them and now Teddy has a real passion for acting. As a parent, you don’t know what pride is until you have children. Having people say how polite Teddy was, how he was such a nice boy, was a compliment. We knew it wasn’t going to be a huge part – he only had a week off.”
As we revealed recently, frozen food sales are soaring due to the cost-of-living crisis with an extra 7.6m tonnes being sold in supermarkets in the three months before June.
Caroline and Adam have been working with Birds Eye, which found 92% of parents struggled getting their kids ready to go back to school and 22% wanted food and cooking support.
Freezer grub is also better for the environment as it prevents food waste such as when you dump fresh produce that has gone off.
Caroline says: “If it’s in your freezer, it’s a guarantee you will eat it. You want to spend time with your children rather than cooking so turn to your freezer as it’s nutritious, low in salt and sugar. Children are going to remember your cuddles, not your cooking. I’m a perfectionist with my house – I come last. My happiness is making sure everyone else is happy.”
● Birds Eye recently partnered with Adam and Caroline to unveil the Freezer Fillers UK Tour 2023. The couple helped explain how quality frozen food can lend a helping hand and give parents one less thing to worry about. See birdseye.co.uk/recipes for some quick cooking ideas.
