Teddy unconscious on Grey's Anatomy
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy has seen an abundance of stars walk in and out of its doors but what was the reason for George O’Malley actor TR Knight’s exit?
Kind-hearted George (played by TR Knight) was a fan-favourite in Grey’s Anatomy for the first five seasons and was a big character at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Not only was he best friends with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and close to many of his other colleagues, he was also married to Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) but cheated on her which resulted in their divorce.
His story came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end though in season six when he jumped in front of a bus to save a woman’s life on his way home from work.
George was left severely disfigured from the incident so when he was taken into hospital, he wasn’t immediately recognised.

It wasn’t until he traced “007” on Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) hand that they realised who the “John Doe” patient was.
Sadly, during surgery, George’s brain fatally swelled, leading him to be brain damaged and his untimely demise.
Why did TR Knight leave Grey’s Anatomy as George O’Malley?
George O’Malley star TR Knight left Grey’s Anatomy due to a “breakdown of communication” with the creators of the series, in particular executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
His appearances started to be few and far between with George featuring in just 48 minutes of the first nine episodes of series five in comparison to 114 for Sandra Oh’s Christina.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his exit, Knight said: “My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George]. And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”
Prior to his exit, there was drama away from the cameras as well with an argument between himself and Dempsey with actor Isaiah Washington intervening and calling Knight a “f****t”.
This resulted in Knight coming out as gay to the public and Washington being fired for the remarks.

Knight returned to work for season four but he struggled with the storyline where George cheats on his wife Callie with Izzie.
These factors, combined with his diminishing presence onscreen, led to his exit from the show.
Knight said: “There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision.”
Grey’s Anatomy is available to watch on ABC.
