EastEnders fans are used to seeing actor Roger Griffiths as Mitch Baker in the long-running BBC soap.

Fan favourite Mitch didn't have the best start at family life, failing to stick around for his kids Chantelle and Keegan with partner Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley). However, the character has redeemed himself over the years, becoming more of a dad and learning to become more responsible with the introduction of his youngest daughter Bailey when her mum Dinah passed away.

Mitch has since become a well-loved part of life in Albert Square since 2018, winning himself fans thanks to his bromance with Mick Carter and his loving relationship with ex-girlfriend Karen.

Fans may not realise it thanks to his youthful personality and good looks but Roger is actually 62 years old having, celebrated his birthday on February 6. Roger isn't just an on-screen dad and has three sons of his own – Troy, Tyler and Zain – with his partner Danielle Melville.

    Lenny Henry link

Roger originally found his way onto TV screens when he starred alongside Lenny Henry in BBC One sitcom Chef! He played Everton Stonehead alongside Lenny's character Gareth Blackstock between 1993 until 1996.

Chef! aired as 20 episodes over three series was created and primarily written by Peter Tilbury based on an idea from Lenny himself. Henry starred as Gareth Blackstock, a talented, arrogant, tyrannical and obsessed chef who has endlessly inventive insults for his staff, unknowing customers, and almost anyone else he encounters.

Although focused on the restaurant's kitchen, the countryside and the Blackstocks' home life were also backdrops for the show.

    EastEnders roles

Roger may be most easily recognised as Mitch but the character isn't his first role in the soap. He originally starred as Detective Inspector Chris Riddick from 2004 until 2005.

The character appeared in 18 episodes and was the arresting officer when Chrissie Watts was charged with murdering husband 'Dirty' Den Watts. Fast forward 13 years to 2018 and Roger rejoined the cast of the hit soap as Mitch and has been a fan favourite ever since.

    TV star

While he has become synonymous with EastEnders, Roger has had his fair share of acting roles outside of the soap – including in popular BBC medical drama Holby City. He starred in 17 episodes of Holby in varying roles – including playing Kyla Tyson's ex-husband Harvey Tyson in 2006. The character was seen causing trouble for Kyla and inserting himself in her love triangle with Donna and Justin.

He has also starred in Casualty, Doctor Who, My Family, Death In Paradise, The Bill and Doctors. Roger even made it to Hollywood when he appeared in Christian Bale's Batman Begins in 2005.

    Co-star bond

Roger's EastEnders daughter Jessica Plummer, who played Chantelle Atkins in the soap, heaped praise on him during a chat with WhatToWatch following her exit. The I'm A Celebrity star admitted that Roger made her job easier with his emotive acting method.

She said: "Roger always finds a way to connect with your character. He waits until shooting to add colour to lines, in terms of seeing what the other actor does, and he'll react to that. It really helps, as you have to be present, and let the other person's feelings and emotions affect you. He's great."
