Couple pull back plasterboard in basement and are left speechless by discovery

A couple made a shocking discovery when they started renovating their new home.

Cathy and Roy Aukamp, 51 and 52 respectively, were tackling a flooded basement caused by a recent storm.

But they never expected dozens of empty rum bottles to spill out onto their floor.

Cathy, from New Jersey, recalled: "My husband had to remove wet plasterboard and all these bottles came pouring out of one of the walls."

Snapshots of the moment show Roy stunned to silence with a bemused expression on his face and shaking his head.

His partner saw the funny side though, joking: "Thirsty? It's five o'clock somewhere!"

The clip went viral on Instagram, with one responder laughing: "You bought a house from Captain Morgan himself!"

But another person pointed out: "There is nothing funny about this, that poor person had a bad addiction, and I'm sorry that the new chapter in your life had to start off this way with your new home."

This commenter's theory is definitely possible.

After the video swept the web, the former home owner ended up reaching out to the couple.

Cathy said: "The person who did it saw the video after it went viral and reached out and said there are hundreds more but also that he is now three years sober."

It's not the first time home owners have been surprised recently.

Previously, a dad was stunned after pulling up the rotten floorboards in his house.

Meanwhile, a couple who found a hidden "trap door" on their property ended up being pretty freaked out.

And a mum got the shivers when she realised why her home felt so warm.
