Man dies after being gored by a bull while another is struck in the leg at popular Spanish festival

  • The man was gored in a festival in Pobla de Farnals in Valencia on Saturday

A man has died after being gored by a bull at a festival in eastern Spain, while another man was hit in the leg by the same animal.

The Spanish man, who has not been named, was pierced in his side by the creature during a bull running festival in the town of Pobla de Farnal in the Valencia region on Saturday.

The man, who local media report was 61 years old, was taken to hospital, but died from his injuries later, Spanish authorities have said.

Officials also revealed a second man was in hospital in a stable condition after being gored by the same bull, which was called Cocinero – which translates as ‘Chef’ or ‘Cook’.

The two people who were hurt by the bull are believed to have been part of the group who organised the festival on Saturday, September 23, Levante-EMV reports.

Authorities say the man died last night, while a second man was also injured by the bull which was called Cocinero

The man was attacked at around 7.30am and received four horn wounds, including one that injured his lung and liver. He died several hours later at a local hospital, the paper reports.

Local media reports that the council suspended a procession and fireworks display which had been due to take place tonight, following the incident.

The event was part of controversial tradition which sees bulls released onto the streets and runners dashing ahead of them.

The events are popular, but many activists say they are dangerous and cruel, and debates over whether they should be abolished have become more heated in recent years.

More than 1,820 towns in Spain hold events like this every year, according to a recent survey by animal rights groups AnimaNaturalis and CAS International.

Animal rights groups have long called for bull running and bull fighting events in Spain to be cancelled.

Earlier this month horrifying footage came to light showing a distressed bull with its horns on fire being dragged down a street.

The bull, known as a ‘toro embolado’ – or ‘bull with balls’ – is a sight that can be witnessed in many Spanish towns during bull running events.

It sparked calls from non-profit organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for the practice to be outlawed and outrage on social media.

In August shocking video showed a Spanish teenager being gored by a raging bull during a similar event in Castalla, Alicante Province.

The 19-year-old was left with multiple bruises and horn gashes after the animal pinned him against a wall and then threw him into the air like a rag doll.
